Five PhD scholarships in the field of extrasolar planets and their host stars (Comunicado por Sylvio Ferraz Mello em 04/06/2010) The Research Training Group / Graduiertenkolleg GRK1351/1 "Extrasolar Planets and Their Host Stars" funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinshaft (DFG) invites applications for 5 Ph.D. positions in Hamburg or Goettingen starting mid 2010. The appointments will be for an initial period of two years with a possible extension to three years. The Ph.D. Scholarships amount to 1350 EUR per month(tax free). Funding for travel, publication cost and visitor support is available. Further funds are available for married scholarship holders or those with children. We are looking for highly qualified and highly motivated Ph.D. students with a diploma/Masters or equivalent degree in physics or astronomy. We also invite applications from applicants expecting to finish their first degrees in mid/late 2010. Applications including CV, copies of diploma, B.A., M.A. or related certificates should be sent to Juergen Schmitt (jschmitt@hs.uni- hamburg.de). The deadline for all applications is July 1, 2010. Applications from women and disabled people are particularly welcome. More Information can be found on: http://www.hs.uni-hamburg.de/grk/positions.html ************************************************************* EVENTOS ************************************************************* 3. Gaia-FUN Workshop: 1st Announcement (Comunicado por Ramachrisna Teixeira em 04/06/2010) "Gaia-FUN, a Gaia Follow-Up Network for the Solar System Objects" Workshop to be held in Paris Observatory, PARIS, France Monday November 29 to Wednesday December 1, 2010 URL: http://www.imcce.fr/~thuillot/Gaia-FUN/ Scientific Rationale -------------------- The observation of Solar System Objects (SSO) by the Gaia space astrometry mission will be constrained by a scanning law. Several detections of interesting objects may be done with no possibility of further observations by the probe. These objects will then require complementary ground-based observations. Among them, previously unknown Near-Earth Objects, fast moving towards the Earth or going away from it could be found. Several objects discovered by Gaia can also be Inner-Earth Objects, since the probe will observe at rather low Solar elongations. In order to achieve the goal of following interesting targets soon after their first detection in space, a dedicated network is organized, the Gaia Follow-Up Network. This task is performed in the frame the Coordination Unit 4 of the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, devoted to data processing of specific objects. The goal of the network will be to improve the knowledge of the orbit of poorly observed targets by astrometric observations on alert. These activity will be coordinated by a central node interacting with the Gaia data reduction pipeline all along the mission. We organize a workshop in Paris in November 2010 in order to promote the coordination of the network of observing stations already identified or to get in touch with possibly new stations. During this workshop, the status of Gaia will be presented, the alert process and the data processing will be discussed. The participants will be invited to present their equipment, instruments, observing sites and to express their needs. They also will try to converge, during appropriate discussion sessions, to agreed procedures for observation, data policy, and other issues common to all the observers.
