Edição do Boletim Eletrônico da SAB O Boletim Eletrônico da SAB chega, nessa edição, ao número 500. Criado em 03 de maio de 1999, o Boletim foi estabelecendo-se, ao longo desses 10 anos, como um ágil veículo para divulgação de assuntos do interesse da comunidade astronômica profissional brasileira. Seu formato pouco mudou desde a edição inicial: apesar de algumas pequenas modificações na estrutura do boletim, ele continua a ser uma compilação de anúncios e informes diversos enviados à secretaria da SAB, com distribuição por correio eletrônico. IAU Announcement of opportunity - ‘Astronomy for the Developing World’ (Comunicado por Elisabete Dal Pino, Vera Martin e Augusto Daminelli em 18/11/2009) The IAU Strategic Plan “Astronomy for the Developing World” http://iau.org/static/education/strategicplan_091001.pdf is an ambitious blueprint for expanding astronomy development programs over the next decade. The key component of this new Plan is the IAU Office for Astronomy Development (OAD) which will coordinate the many existing and planned IAU activities in the areas of education, sustainable global development and capacity building. This is a long term commitment by the IAU, building on the unparalleled success of the International Year of Astronomy, and the IAU is seeking partners which share the same vision. Among the tasks of the office will be: * Management, coordination and evaluation of the IAU programs in the area of development and education, including recruiting and mobilizing participating volunteers. * Organization of oversight of the IAU development programs and the formulation of their annual budgets. * Liaison with the chairs of the various Commission 46 Program Groups/ sector task forces in planning and implementing the relevant programs. * Liaison with the IAU regional coordinators and IAU regional nodes in planning and implementing the relevant programs. * Provision of administrative support for IAU programs in development, education, and outreach. * Coordination of contacts between the IAU and national authorities. * Establishment of the new IAU endowed lectureship program. * Liaison with other international unions and agencies promoting astronomy in the developing world, such as UNOOSA, COSPAR and USRI. * Stimulation of communication on IAU development matters between members and associated members through the maintenance of an IAU website for development and education and appropriate forums. * Provision of information for astronomers in all developing countries about IAU programs. * Proactive coordination and initiation of fundraising activities for astronomy development. * Report regularly to the IAU Executive Committee on office activity. The key individual in the office will be the Director of Development and Education. This would be a full-time position to be filled by an astronomer or scientist in an allied field with management experience, good international contacts and an affinity both with education at all levels and with international development programs. The Director will be selected by the IAU jointly with the host institution, which will be the Director’s employer. The Director will be responsible ultimately to the IAU Executive Committee for delivery on the tasks of the office. The IAU envisages that the office will require additional staff and that the Director will subsequently participate in the recruitment of: * A full-time Executive Assistant who will support the Director. It is expected that the Assistant will be a university graduate or equivalent capable of deputizing for the Director when necessary. * A part-time (~0.3 FTE) Webmaster to maintain the website. Proposals or expressions of interest are invited from organizations or institutes anywhere in the world willing to host this critically important office for an initial five years. The IAU can provide funding for the office up to a maximum level of €50,000 per year, subject to review. The remaining funds must be provided by the host organization or by sponsoring bodies. These must cover adequate salaries, normal overheads, suitable infrastructure and sufficient support for travel, computers etc. External funds will be sought by the IAU for many of the programs, which may eventually provide partial support for some of the office costs. It would be extremely advantageous to have the office located at an existing astronomical organization with excellent internet facilities. Proposals should outline how it is intended to ensure that the high level goals of the “Astronomy for the Developing World” Plan are met, and how performance against those goals will be assessed. In addition, proposals should contain operational and business plans, including timescales, together with a budget that includes details of proposed salaries and the infrastructure and travel funds that will be available. White Paper: ensino e divulgação (Comunicado por Roberto Costa em 20/11/2009) Como é de conhecimento de todos, o MCT criou a Comissão Especial de Astronomia com o objetivo de elaborar uma proposta de Plano Nacional de Astronomia. Um dos pontos relevantes a ser abordados neste plano chama-se "Astronomia e Sociedade", que inclui as iniciativas de ensino e divulgação da astronomia no Brasil. Assim sendo, a Comissão de Ensino e Divulgação da SAB (COMED) está elaborando um "white paper" no qual serão apontadas as iniciativas e necessidades nesta área, com suas perspectivas para os próximos anos. Convidamos a todos os membros interessados que enviem suas contribuições. Não é necessária a elaboração de um texto estruturado, ainda que quem desejar pode fazê-lo, claro. O que solicitamos é que os interessados enviem-nos um pequeno texto informal listando suas propostas sobre ensino e divulgação de astronomia. A COMED vai se encarregar de compilá-las e elaborar o texto final. A coleção da Sky & Telescope está completa, mas a Astronomy é disponibilizada sem figuras. ================================================================ 5. Consulta à Comunidade sobre ciência no futuro com o SOAR Prezados Colegas, Em preparação para o Comitê de Revisão do SOAR, o Conselho diretor do Observatório (Board do SOAR) solicitou ao SAC (Science Advisory Committe) elaborar um documento com orientações sobre a ciência no futuro que distinguirá o SOAR dentro da classe de telescópios de 4 m existente e ainda, satisfaça as necessidades dos cientistas dos países membros do Consórcio. Por esse motivo, o SAC solicita a opinião da Comunidade brasileira para a preparação desse documento. Mais especificamente, interessa ouvir sobre o tipo de ciência que os usuários do SOAR pretendem desenvolver dentro de 5 anos e dentro de 10 anos. A perspectiva é que em 2015 o SOAR deverá ter completado vários anos de ciência continuada com uma gama completa de instrumentos que incluem os seguintes: Espectrógrafo óptico e MOS Goodman Módulo de óptica adaptativa do SOAR (SAM) com imageador óptico Imageador no infravermelho próximo SPARTAN 4Kx4K IFU óptico SIFS Espectrógrafo Echelle óptico STELES Espectrógrafo infravermelho OSIRIS Além desses instrumentos, a Comunidade brasileira teria acesso ao Brazilian Tunable Filter Imager (BTFI), atualmente em construção, e que pode operar em conjunto com o SAM. O BTFI está projetado como de uso restrito mas pode obter facilmente o status de "Facility instrument" se existir um forte interesse no seu uso pelos outros parceiros. Já em 2020, novas ferramentas de última tecnologia terão sido recentemente comissionadas ou estarão em fase de comissionamento. O LSST (Large Sinoptic Survery Telescope) estará operando em Cerro Pachón ao lado do SOAR e do Gemini e dois ou três Telescópios extremamente grandes (ELTs, Extremely Large Telescope) estarão próximos de operação. O telescópio Espacial James Webb estará produzindo ciência, assim como ALMA, que estará em operação já por um certo tempo. Face a esse cenário, é fundamental responder à questão: como o SOAR poderá maximizar o seu impacto nessa época? É importante mencionar que contratualmente (Clausula 27 do termo de acordo do Consórcio) o projeto SOAR será revisado por um comitê externo ad hoc conhecido pelo nome de Comitê de Revisão do SOAR. Essa revisão está prevista para acontecer uma vez a cada cinco anos a partir da data de início das operações de ciência (2005). O documento que o SAC está elaborando visa obter subsídios para informar ao Comitê de revisão sobre o potencial científico do SOAR no futuro. A participação da Comunidade Brasileira é essencial no processo. Zwicky Prize Fellowship in Astrophysics - ETH Zurich (Comunicado por Rodolfo Smiljanic em 24/11/2009) Job Description: The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) expects to award one or more ETH Zwicky Prize Fellowships in Astrophysics. The Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding researchers in any area of astrophysics who have usually received their PhD within the last four years. The Fellowships are normally awarded for three years, but may be extended to up to six years. The Fellowships will be held at the Institute for Astronomy in the Department of Physics. The Institute has active research groups in extragalactic astrophysics, observational cosmology, star- and planet- formation, and solar and stellar astrophysics. The institute has close ties with astrophysicists at the University of Zurich and with other researchers elsewhere in the ETH Departments of Physics and Earth Science. The Zwicky Fellows are expected to carry out independent research and to contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute. Opportunities exist for co-supervision of students at all levels. Switzerland is a full member of ESO and ESA, and Fellows have access to all their observational facilities. The ETH Astrophysics group has guaranteed access to a network of workstations and a large fast- connection Beowulf cluster.
