Research Associates - North American ALMA Science Center at NRAO (Comunicado por Dimitri Gadotti em 28/10/2009) Research Associates - North American ALMA Science Center at NRAO in Charlottesville, Virginia No. 25942 Position/Title: Research Associates Institution: North American ALMA Science Center at NRAO in Charlottesville, Virginia Submit Resumes To: Attention: Human Resources URL1: https://careers.nrao.edu The closing date for receipt of applications: 11/30/2009 ______________________________ __ Job Description: Applications are invited for one or two Research Associates (Postdoctoral Scholars) at the North American ALMA Science Center at NRAO in Charlottesville, Virginia. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr. Kartik Sheth and the S4G (Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies) team. S4G is designed to be the ultimate legacy survey for the distribution of stellar structure in the nearby universe http://web.ipac.caltech.edu/~kartik/s4goverview.pdf ). Using IRAC Channels 1 and 2 over the two year Spitzer warm mission, we will obtain extremely deep observations of the stellar mass distribution for a sample of ~2,300 nearby (d<40Mpc) galaxies (dwarfs, ellipticals, irregular, spirals), thus assembling an unprecedented dataset for studies of structure formation during galaxy evolution. The successful applicant is expected to become an integral and equal member of the team. S/he will work with the team members to reduce, analyze and verify the data, design and deliver the data products for the community. The ideal candidate will also design and pursue a vigorous, independent science research program primarily using the S4G data. S/he may also envision using and/or obtaining data from new observations or existing surveys (e.g., COSMOS, SDSS) to complement the proposed science. The applicant is strongly encouraged to take advantage of the location and the involvement of the NRAO and University of Virginia's existing and future facilities, particularly ALMA and eVLA. Applicants are encouraged to research the survey, discuss their goals with any of the Co-Is and formulate an ambitious research proposal, which should be submitted as part of the application package. Candidates should have obtained, by the starting date, a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or equivalent, in an area relevant to these projects. The appointment is for two years (with the possibility of a renewal for a further year) and could start as early as November 2009. For further requirements and to apply, please visit our Careers site at https:\\careers.nrao.edu . Please include a cover letter describing your interest in the position, a curriculum vitae, publication list, a brief statement of past research (1-2 pages), and a detailed proposed research statement (3 pages), as described above. Please also have 3 letters of recommendation sent independently to hr@nrao.edu. Review of applications will begin November 15th and will continue until the position is filled. NRAO is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/D/V. Included Benefits: Medical and dental insurance, retirement benefits, vacation and sick leave accrual. ================================================================ 2. Candidaturas de estudantes de mestrado ao programa europeu Astromundus (Comunicado por Cláudia Mendes de Oliveira em 30/10/2009) *Deadlines:* *December 31st 2009* for Third Country students (i.e. from countries that are not members of the European Union and associated countries) *April 30th 2010* for European students (EU and associated countries) AstroMundus is a newly established international Master Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics that has been selected by the European Commission as an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course within the second edition of the Erasmus Mundus programme. The Master course is open to students of all nationalities and is jointly offered by --the Institute of Astro- and Particle Physics, University of Innsbruck, --the Department of Astronomy, University of Padova, --the Astrophysics section of the Department of Physics, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", --the Institute for Astrophysics, Department of Astronomy, University of Goettingen --the Department of Astronomy, Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade Applications are now solicited for the Master course starting in September 2010. The programme has a duration of 2 years (120 ECTS credits), is developed within a consortium of 5 Universities in 4 different countries (Austria, Italy, Germany, and Serbia), and is conducted in the English Language. The wide variety of expertise covered by our international partnership insures an excellent educational level in all branches of Astrophysics. We invite applications from top-ranked students that either hold or are expected to obtain before August 2010 a Bachelor's Degree (or an equivalent certified period of studies of at least 3 years, corresponding to 180 credits in the European Credit Transfer System) in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Mathematics or closely related fields. A certified good knowledge of the English language is required. The selected students will carry out their studies in at least 2 and up to 4 of the AstroMundus Consortium Universities and will be finally awarded a Joint Master Degree, complemented with a Diploma Supplement, by all consortium Universities they visited during their studies. Several Erasmus Mundus scholarships will be made available by the European Commission to both non-European and European students. The selection of students is primarily based on excellence. Further details are available in the AstroMundus brochure at: http://www.uibk.ac.at/astromundus/brochure_astromundus.pdf Full information about the AstroMundus programme, the application form, and detailed instructions on how to apply can be found on the web-site: http://www.astromundus.eu The contact e-mail for inquiries is: astromundus@uibk.ac.at ================================================================ 3. Post-doc position in observational studies of massive stars at Universidad de Valparaiso (Comunicado por Alex Carciofi em 30/10/2009) The Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Universidad de Valparaiso, Chile, invites applications for a postdoctoral position for an observational astronomer in the field of massive stars. The main goal of this project is to improve our knowledge related to the structure of circumstellar disks, formed from material ejected by massive and fast rotating stars, through an integrated observational plus theoretical approach in collaboration with Dr. Lydia Cidale (La Plata, Argentina) and Dr. M. Kraus (Ondrejov, Czech Republic). This work will focus on the analysis of the wind properties and the circumstellar geometry of objects showing the Be or B[e] phenomenon, using mainly data originating from the GEMINI-South facilities. The position is for two years. The starting date should from March 1, 2010. The successful candidate will have full access to the 10% of Chilean observing time at the international telescopes operating in Chile, as ESO (VLT and La Silla), APEX, Gemini South, SOAR, Magellan, and to the other telescopes at Cerro Tololo and Las Campanas observatories. Valparaiso is, together with the neighboring town Viña del Mar, the most important urban center of Chile, outside the capital Santiago. It also hosts one of the largest concentrations of Universities in Chile. The Universidad de Valparaiso has recently created a rapidly growing research group in astrophysics which currently numbers seven professors (www.dfa.uv.cl). Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be made to Professor Dr. Michel Cure (michel.cure@uv.cl) Applicants should send, before Dec. 31, 2009, and by e-mail, their CV, publication list, statement of research interests, and arrange for two letters of recommendation. ================================================================ 4.
