XMM-Newton Announcement of Opportunity (Comunicado por Raimundo Lopes de Oliveira Filho em 25/08/2009) Letter of Invitation by the ESA Director of Science and Robotic Exploration Dear Colleague, I am very pleased to invite you to respond to the ninth "Announcement of Opportunity" to submit proposals for observations to be performed with the XMM-Newton observatory. XMM-Newton is the second cornerstone of ESA's Horizon 2000 Science Programme. It was launched by an Ariane 5 launcher on the 10th of December 1999 and offers astronomers a unique opportunity to perform high throughput non-dispersive spectroscopic imaging in the energy range from 0.2 keV to 12 keV (European Photon Imaging Camera; EPIC) and medium resolution dispersive spectroscopy (Reflection Grating Spectrometer; RGS) in the energy range from 0.4 keV to 2.2 keV. In addition it provides simultaneous optical/UV observations with a co-aligned telescope (Optical Monitor; OM). This Announcement solicits proposals to be carried out in the period from May 2010 to April 2011. Proposers from all over the world are welcome to participate. All proposals will be subject to independent peer review by the XMM-Newton Observing Time Allocation Committee (OTAC). Potential proposers are expected to prepare and submit proposals in electronic form, by the deadline given below, using the XMM-Newton Remote Proposal Submission (RPS) software. Postdoctoral Position at Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Grenoble (Comunicado por Marcelo Borges Fernandes em 26/08/2009) A postdoctoral position is offered at Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Grenoble. The successful applicant will work with Anne-Marie Lagrange and collaborators. The main astrophysical interests of our group are extrasolar planets, planetary systems formation and evolution, and young and close stellar associations. The group is in particular involved in exoplanet searches using both radial velocity and high angular resolution imaging (Adaptive Optics), and is also involved in the preparation of SPHERE, the forthcoming instrument dedicated to planet imaging on the VLT. The candidate should preferably have expertise in one of these areas. The initial appointment is for two years. The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is identified. Postdoctoral and PhD positions in Infrared Interferometry (Comunicado por Marcelo Borges Fernandes em 26/08/2009) Applications are invited for postdoctoral and PhD positions in the Infrared Interferometry Group of the Max-Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn (see http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/div/ir-interferometry). Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one of the following areas: young stellar objects, active galactic nuclei, radiative transfer modeling, or infrared interferometry. Successful applicants will be expected to participate in interferometric observations and their interpretations, or in instrumentation projects (e.g., science software development for the VLTI-MATISSE instrument). The position offers excellent opportunities for high-resolution studies using the VLT Interferometer. Since our group is a member of the international LBT consortium, we own LBT Guaranteed Observing Time. The appointment is initially for two years and is renewable for up to six years. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, list of publications, and brief description of research interests, and arrange for one letter of recommendation to be emailed to weigelt@mpifr.de. The review of applications will begin on 01 October 2009 and will continue until the position is filled. IX Workshop Nova Física no Espaço (Comunicado por Reuven Opher em 20/08/2009) IX Workshop Nova Física no Espaço Campos do Jordão - SP 28 de Fevereiro a 6 de Março de 2010 Caro Colega, O IX Workshop Nova Física no Espaço vai acontecer entre fevereiro e março, 28/2 a 06/3/10, no Hotel Leão da Montanha em Campos do Jordão, SP. Você está convidado para participar e apresentar trabalho neste evento que vem sendo realizado há oito anos com grande sucesso. O objetivo do Workshop é a discussão de pesquisas sobre Nova Física no Espaço, que foram feitas no Brasil no último ano.
