PhD position on The Galactic Population of Open Clusters (Comunicado por Rodolfo Smiljanic em 30/07/2009) The Department of Astrophysics of the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Astronomical Institute of Utrecht University, and Leiden Observatory invite applications for a PhD position on:           `The Galactic population of open clusters' funded by the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA), the confederation of the five university astronomy departments in the Netherlands. The aim of the project is to use optical data from the European Galactic Plane Surveys and infrared data from the UKIRT Galactic Plane Survey and the VISTA VVV survey to investigate the population of open clusters in our Milky Way Galaxy and to understand the formation, evolution and survival/dissipation of open clusters in the Galactic environment. Special attention will be paid to the distribution of open clusters as a function of galactocentric radius and metallicity. The project will allow to a) obtain deeper and more homogeneous coverage of known Galactic open clusters, b) study the effect of Galactic position on cluster evolution, both observationally as well as numerically and c) effectively search for new open clusters. The PhD project will be supervised by prof.dr. Paul Groot (RU Nijmegen), dr. Soeren Larsen (UU) and prof.dr. Simon Portegies Zwart (UL). Considerable time will be be spent at each university, with a start period in Nijmegen. The candidate must hold a Master's degree in (astro)physics at the start of the PhD project. Salaries are according to the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities and start at Euro 2042 gross/month. End-of- year and holiday allowances will additionally be paid. Selection of candidates commences on September 15, 2009. A start date not later than 1 January, 2010 is expected. Applications should include two letters of references, which can be sent with the application or separately to the address below. We also request a brief (at most 1 page) statement of research interests. Application letters can be sent to: Secretariat Department of Astrophysics Radboud University Nijmegen P.O. Box 9010, 6500 GL Nijmegen The Netherlands or by email to secr@astro.ru.nl quoting job description: 'NOVA Cross-Network Clusters'. Email inquiries can be directed to prof. Paul Groot (p.groot@astro.ru.nl) and/or dr. Soeren Larsen (s.s.larsen@uu.nl) ================================================================ 3. Pathways towards habitable planets (Comunicado por Marcelo Borges Fernandes em 30/07/2009) 14-18 SEPTEMBER 2009 Barcelona, Spain The detailed (near final) scientific programme for the Pathways conference is now available online at http://www.pathways2009.net/programme.html Registration and submission of papers is still possible, but at this stage only posters can now be accepted, up to the poster submission deadline of August 30th. We will work hard to give as much exposure as possible to poster papers. The programme includes a number of timeslots reserved for short poster presentations. In addition, we will ensure that plenty of time is available during coffee and lunch breaks for poster viewing. Finally, during all breaks a slideshow will be run on the main screen displaying the highlights from each poster. We encourage you to visit the main conference website (http://www.pathways2009.net) for further details, to submit your abstract, and register. Looking forward to seeing you in Barcelona, Vincent Coudé du Foresto and Ignasi Ribas for the Scientific Organizing Committee (soc@pathways2009.net) ================================================================ 5.
