ESA Research Fellowship in Space Science (Comunicado por Adriana Silva Válio em 17/06/2009) The ESA Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme is aimed at providing young scientists, holding a PhD or the equivalent degree, with the means of performing research in space science. The programme is open to suitably qualified women and men. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Candidates not holding a PhD yet can also apply, but they must provide evidence of receiving their degree before starting the fellowship. Appointments for an ESA fellowship are for two years, after which Fellows normally leave ESA. The fellowship in space science is tenable at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, or at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villafranca del Castillo near Madrid, Spain. The Fellowship Programme does not currently grant fellowships in other institutions outside of ESA. The fellowships are open to nationals of ESA Member States (Austria, Belgium,  Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) and to nationals of states adhering to the PECS cooperation scheme (Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Romania). Furthermore, nationals of other states with which ESA has a cooperation agreement (e.g. Argentina, Brazil, China, Estonia, India, Russian Federation and Turkey) can have access to a one-year international traineeship along lines similar to those of the research fellowship. Young scientists interested in the possibility of an international traineeship in space science, at the post-doctoral level, should contact directly the fellowship coordinator, Guido De Marchi, for more information. The application form can be found at http://www.rssd.esa.int/SYS/FACULTY/include/ApplicationForm.doc. Candidates should produce a PDF file using the application form as a template and submit it electronically by e-mail to the address temp.htr@esa.int, as indicated on the form. Candidates must also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent by e-mail, before the deadline, to the same address temp.htr@esa.int. The letters must be sent by the referees themselves, one of whom should be the candidate's PhD supervisor. In the unlikely event that a letter of reference cannot be submitted electronically, it may be sent by post to: ESTEC, Fellowship programme, Human Resources Division, Keplerlaan 1, 2200 AG Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Applications and letters arriving after the deadline will not be considered. II Workshop Challenges of New Physics in Space (Comunicado por Reuven Opher em 26/06/2009) II Workshop Challenges of New Physics in Space Campos do Jordão – SP 13 a 18 de dezembro de 2009 Caros Colegas, O “II Workshop Challenges of New Physics in Space” vai acontecer em Campos do Jordão, no Orotour Garden Hotel, de 13 de dezembro (domingo à tarde) a 18 de dezembro de 2009 (sexta-feira às 12hs). O “I Workshop Challenges of New Physics in Space” aconteceu em abril deste ano com a participação de Joseph Silk (Univ. of Oxford), William Unruh (Univ. Brit. Columbia) e Luca Amendola (Univ. of Rome) e teve muito sucesso. O programa, resumos e informações gerais sobre este workshop pode ser encontrado no site: www.astro.iag.usp.br/~challenges Como parte de meu temático da FAPESP, recebi verba para realizar workshops sobre o tema “Challenges of New Physics in Space”. Nestes workshops, especialistas estrangeiros e brasileiros apresentam o que acham ser os grandes desafios da nova física no espaço. Estes workshops (em inglês) complementam os workshops anuais (em português) que no mês de fevereiro de cada ano, onde brasileiros, físicos e astrofísicos, apresentam os resultados de suas pesquisas do último ano sobre assuntos relacionados à nova física no espaço e discutem estes resultados com os outros participantes. Os especialistas estrangeiros, e suas áreas de pesquisa, que vão participar do “II Workshop Challenges of New Physics in Space” são: 1- Michael Strauss (Princeton Univ.) - Astronomia Extragaláctica e Cosmologia 2- Joshua Frieman (Fermilab e Univ. of Chicago) – Astronomia Extragaláctica e Cosmologia 3- Mathew Choptuik (Univ. Brit. Columbia) - Cálculos Numéricos em Relatividade Geral 4- Clifford Will (Wash. Univ. in St. Louis) - Testando a Relatividade Geral 5- Glenn Starkman (Case Western) – Cosmologia 6- Wayne Hu (Univ. of Chicago) - CMB e Cosmologia Os especialistas estrangeiros vão apresentar duas palestras de 1:30h cada. Todas as palestras de brasileiros, as quais são convidadas, serão de 15 minutos. Haverá tempo amplo para discussões depois das palestras. As outras apresentações brasileiras serão na forma de painéis com uma apresentação oral de duas transparências. Vou cobrir as despesas de hotel dos participantes que irão apresentar palestras orais. Se o número de participantes for grande, vou cobrir as despesas de hotel somente dos participantes mais seniors. Sartori em 25/06/2009) 1.  We are pleased to highlight the work of Iraklis Konstantopoulos (University College London) and collaborators who used GMOS North to obtain high signal-to-noise optical spectra of a large sample of young stellar clusters in the starburst galaxy M82.  The authors derived the ages of the clusters and establish a clearer picture of this dusty, edge-on galaxy by combining Gemini data with HST and CO observations based Owens Valley Radio Observatory millimeter interferometry.
