Postdoc position in FIR-submm astronomy - Universiteit Gent (Comunicado por Dimitri Gadotti em 13/05/2009) The Sterrenkundig Observatorium of Universiteit Gent (UGent) invites applications for a postdoc to work on the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS), an open-time key project on the FIR-submm Herschel Space Observatory. HeViCS will make a fully sampled map of about 60 square degrees of the Virgo Cluster, using both PACS and SPIRE. The main goals of the projects include the detection of cold dust in the intra-cluster medium, the study of the UV to submm SED of cluster galaxies of different morphological types and the study of the cluster FIR-submm luminosity functions and dust mass function. In the international HeViCS collaboration, the UGent group will lead the PACS data reduction. Besides being involved in the data reduction, the postdoc is strongly encouraged to actively participate to the science exploitation of HeViCS and/or Herschel ATLAS (according to his/her preference). Sufficient travel funds and a dedicated computer cluster are available. The Sterrenkundig Observatorium is an expanding international research group. With some 55,000 students, Ghent is one of the most important student towns in Belgium. It has a vibrant community and an outstanding cultural life. The position starts as soon as possible and runs until December 2011 (an extension for three more years is possible). Motivated applicants should submit a CV and arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to the address below (email applications are welcome). All applications before 31 May 2009 will receive full consideration. However, the position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. For more inquiries and submission: Maarten Baes, phone +32-9-264-4793, maarten.baes@ugent.be http://www.ugent.be/ http://www.arcetri.astro.it/twiki/bin/view/HeViCS/WebHome ************************************************************* NOTÍCIAS ************************************************************* 5. Notícias do Gemini (Excertos do Gemini e-Newscast #11) (Comunicado por Marília J. Sartori em 08/05/2009) 1. Gemini conducted its first User Survey at the end of 2008. Find the details of the results and a proposed plan of action that will be discussed at the 2009 Kyoto Gemini Users Meeting on May 22. See: http://www.gemini.edu/node/11256 where you will find the link to the summary document prepared by Dennis Crabtree, Associate Director for Science Operations. 2. The Gemini DataFlow and Data Reduction Group completed a significant milestone recently with the transition from IRAF to PyRAF for night-time science operations at the Gemini North and South Telescopes. IRAF is the standard data reduction software for astronomy which has been around since the early 1980¹s. IRAF is not very good for running automated data reduction pipelines which is the direction we are moving in with the dataflow project. Thus, a project led by Kathleen Labrie and her team in close collaboration with STScI, was initiated in early 2006 to ensure that the Gemini data reduction software and operations would run in PyRAF. PyRAF is a system which allows older IRAF tasks to run in a more stable environment and also provides for the development of new software using more modern approaches, i.e., not the 1980¹s! Now that PyRAF is in general use for our operations, we can in confidence take the next step with the dataflow project (pipeline automatic data reduction) and develop software for our new instruments with modern tools. 3. Dr. Eileen Friel, Division Officer at the NSF Division of Astronomical Sciences has been appointed as the new Director of the Lowell Observatory. http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=28121 Eileen has a long and solid connection with the Gemini Observatory. She served as the Executive Secretary of the Gemini Board and recently she was the NSF representative on the Gemini Board. 4. The Kyoto 2009 Joint Subaru/Gemini Science Conference is in the final phase of preparations. You can still register at http://www.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/kyoto2009/info.html The late deadline (28th April) is past but you can make a special "appeal" to the Chair of the LOC, Prof. Otha-san. Note that some important meetings will be held around this event: the Gemini Users' Meeting and the Gemini International Time Allocation Committee. **********************************************************************Participe da lista de discusssão FÓRUM-DA-SAB Para associar-se vá a http://groups.google.com/group/sabforum **********************************************************************
