Um abraço, Opher ----------------------------- Anexo: o email do J. Silk From: joe silk To: Reuven Opher Cc: Mike Jones Sent: Tue, 28 Apr 2009 13:03:51 +0100 Subject: CLOVER update Dear Opher I was interested to hear from you that Brazil is launching a new initiative that could involve millimetre telescopes in Atacama. As you requested, here are the details on possible participation in a cosmology-focussed project that might prove appealling to the Brazilian community. You have probably heard about the cancellation of CLOVER. See Science news article below. Also Nature article (attached) for a science perspective on the B mode race. Clover could be one of the first. And more importantly its angular resolution plus frequency coverage combination is a unique combination that is essential in preparing the way for the ultimate Inflation Probe, a future (post Planck) satellite expected to emerge in the ongoing US Decadal Review. Would Brazil be interested in providing site support (Atacama), infrastructure and running costs, in return for a partnership in CLOVER? The hardware (two telescopes, detector arrays at 3 frequencies) could be the UK contribution. Obviously I can't offer this but my impression is (strictly unofficially) that such a deal might be negotiable. I am ccing this to the CLOVER project scientist, Mike Jones. Best Joe --------------------------------------- CLOVER is a multi-frequency experiment optimised to measure the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization, in particular the B- mode component. ClOVER comprises two instruments observing respectively at 97 GHz and 150/225 GHz. The focal plane of both instruments consists of an array of corrugated feed-horns coupled to TES detectors cooled at 100 mK. The primary science goal of ClOVER is to be sensitive to gravitational waves down to r ~ 0.03 (at [UTF-8?]3s)in two years of operations. ------------------------------------- ************************************************************* OPORTUNIDADES ************************************************************* 2. This position is initially funded by the ESO for a period of two years, and then will be extended as an indefinite appointment funded by the UCN. The extension of the term of the successful candidate is subject to adequate performance of responsibilities during the first two years. The applicants should hold a PhD in astrophysics or related field and should have a postdoctoral experience. Researchers in any area of astrophysics will be considered. Responsibilities of the successful candidate include the teaching of courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as the supervision of postgraduate students. So, native speakers or those having good command of Spanish are especially encouraged to apply. The appointee will be able to apply for Chile's 10% share of telescope time for all observatories, both optical and radio, located in the country. In addition, the facilities of the university observatory on Cerro Armazones, located not far from Paranal and operated by the IA, are available. They include a number of telescopes, the largest of which is 1.5-m hexapod telescope with active optics and spectrograph. Interested candidates should send CV, publication list, a brief description of their research and teaching interests and experience, and two letters of recommendation to the IA at the above addresses. Submission by e-mail is preferred. Review of applications will begin on June 1, 2009, and continue until the position is filled. Heidelberg Conference on The Milky Way and the Local Group - Now and in the GAIA Era (Comunicado por Wilton Dias em 04/05/2009) Our Milky Way, M31, and the other galaxies of the Local Group allow us to study galaxy properties and evolutionary processes at a level of detail that is not accessible in more distant galaxies. This makes these nearby galaxies an indispensable laboratory for, e.g., testing cosmological scenarios, for conducting galactic archaeology, or for investigating currently ongoing processes such as star formation in unprecedented detail. Tremendous progress has been made in these areas over the past few years, which is in part due to major ground-based and space-based surveys and to the availability of 8-10m class telescopes. These observational advances are accompanied by significant progress in N-body, SPH, and chemodynamical modeling of galaxy formation and evolution. The cornerstone space mission Gaia (launch: 2012) will provide high-precision phase-space information for about one billion stars in our Galaxy and its surroundings, along with the physical parameters and the chemical composition of many of these stars. Heidelberg astronomers are leading the German part of the preparation of this mission. Gaia will turn the coming decade into a golden age for Galactic astronomy and will revolutionize our understanding of the origin, evolution, structure, and dynamics of the Milky Way as a whole and of its components. Our conference focuses on the substantial recent advances in our understanding of the evolution of the Milky Way and of the Local Group, both from the theoretical and observational point of view as well as in terms of new facilities and surveys. Special emphasis will be placed on the prospects of the forthcoming Gaia mission.
