2. Post-doctoral researcher at Exeter on Extra-solar planets
(Comunicado por Adriana Válio em 12/02/2009)
The University of Exeter intends to appoint a post-doctoral researcher in
the field of transiting extra-solar planets, to work with Suzanne Aigrain
and Frederic Pont in the School of Physics (Astrophysics Group). The
successful applicant will use space-based facilities including CoRoT and
HST in conjunction with complementary ground-based observations, in
particular high-resolution spectroscopy, to detect, characterise and/or
study the atmospheres of transiting extra-solar planets. They will be
encouraged to collaborate with other members of the Astrophysics Group,
which numbers approximately 35 staff, postdocs and graduate students
working in theoretical and observational studies of star formation and
extra-solar planets.
Applicants with a background in observational studies of extra-solar
planets are particularly encouraged to apply; strong applicants from other
areas will be considered. Applicants must hold, or expect to hold before
taking up the position, a PhD (or equivalent) in Astrophysics or another
relevant discipline.
A CV, list of publications, and a brief description of research interests
and accomplishments should be submitted electronically to Dr. Suzanne
Aigrain (S.Aigrain@exeter.ac.uk). Applicants should additionally arrange
for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address.
Applications received by April 15, 2009, will receive full consideration,
but further applications will be considered until the position is filled.
This is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years, starting between May and
October 2009. The starting salary will be in the range £24,152 –
£26,391 pa, depending on qualifications and experience.
The University of Exeter is an equal opportunity employer and promotes
diversity in its workforce and, whilst all applicants will be judged on
merit alone, is particularly keen to consider applications from groups
currently underrepresented in the workforce.

5. Staff position in astronomy at ASTRON
(Comunicado por Antônio Mário Magalhães em 16/02/2009)
Deadline: March 15, 2009
The Astronomy Group at ASTRON (Dwingeloo, NL) invites applications
for a staff position for research in astronomy. This position offers
exciting opportunities for innovative research with the LOFAR and WSRT
telescopes. ASTRON is building LOFAR, a new generation low-frequency
multi-field aperture array telescope. This will provide, starting this
year, unique data in this relatively unexplored spectral window. ASTRON
also operates the upgraded Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). A
new generation focal plane arrays (APERture Tile in Focus - APERTIF) is
being developed for the WSRT in order to significantly expand its field of
view, enabling new types of astronomical research.
The successful candidate should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or a
related discipline and an excellent record in astronomical research and
publications. He/she is expected to carry out innovative research in
his/her own field of expertise using ASTRON telescope facilities as well
as other world-class astronomical instruments.
In addition, he/she is expected to being able to provide valuable input
into the various astronomical and technical programmes at ASTRON and take
part in defining, developing, commissioning new facilities in which ASTRON
is involved. Research interest and experience in observational radio
astronomy is desirable. Affinity with instrumentation or software is also
valued. The appointment is initially for two years and may then become
permanent subject to positive evaluation.
The successful candidate will have access to excellent computational
facilities and travel support. Collaboration is encouraged with the Radio
Observatory staff and the nearby University Astronomy
Departments in Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, Nijmegen and Utrecht.
Letters of application (including a CV, scientific interests and a
research proposal), plus 3 letters of reference should be sent to
personnel@astron.nl before the deadline - 15 March 2009.
The successful candidate will be in the formal employ of the Netherlands
Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), at a salary scale commensurate
with age and experience. Generous relocation expenses, excellent package
of benefits and assistance with finding accommodation will be provided.
For further enquires please contact: Dr. Raffaella Morganti
(morganti@astron.nl), Head of the Astronomy Group.

6. IAU Joint Discussion on "Astrophysical Outflows and Associated Accretion
Phenomena"
(Comunicado por Elisabete de Gouveia dal Pino em 11/02/09)
We invite you to the IAU Joint Discussion on "Astrophysical Outflows and
Associated Accretion Phenomena" which will be held during the IAU XXVII
General Assembly, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 6 - 7, 2009.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM RESUME:
Highly collimated supersonic jets and outflows are very frequent in
several astrophysical environments. They are seen in young stellar objects
(YSOs), proto-planetary nebulae, compact objects (like galactic black
holes or microquasars, and X-ray binary stars), active galactic nuclei,
and are also possibly associated to gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the most
energetic events in the Universe, and to ultra-high energy cosmic rays
sources (UHECRs). Despite their different physical scales, all these
outflow classes have strong morphological similarities, but questions like
- what physics do they share? - or - can we find a universal mechanism of
acceleration and collimation that operates in all classes? - remain a
matter of debate.
The Program topics of the meeting will include:
- Optical and molecular young stellar outflows
- Evidences of rotation and magnetic fields in jets
- Connection between jets and star formation
- Multi-wavelength observations of extragalactic and microquasar jets
- GRBs and UHECRs jet connection
- Heating/cooling and acceleration mechanisms in jets
- Relation between AGN jets and radiatively inefficient accretion flows
- Magnetic reconnection, turbulence and dynamo action in accretion disks
- Angular Momentum Transport in accretion disks
- Impact of Jets in turbulence and energy balance in the environment
- Similarities and Differences among astrophysical jet classes
- Numerical Simulations

7. IAU Joint Discussion on "Magnetic Fields in Diffuse Gas"
(Comunicado por Elisabete de Gouveia dal Pino em 11/02/09)
We would like to invite you to the IAU Joint Discussion on "Magnetic
Fields in Diffuse Gas" which will be held during the IAU XXVII General
Assembly, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 12 - 14, 2009.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM RESUME:
Most of the baryonic matter in the Universe is permeated by magnetic
fields, which affect many, if not most of astrophysical phenomena in
diffuse gas. Recent years have been marked by a worldwide growing interest
in the magnetic fields, their origin, and their influence on the formation
and evolution of astrophysical objects (stars, galaxies, cooling flows).
This interest is growing as it has become feasible to trace magnetic
fields in molecular clouds, over vast extensions of the Milky Way and to
study extragalactic magnetic fields, including fields in clusters of
galaxies.
The Program topics include:
ISM magnetic Fields: Theory and numerical simulations
ISM magnetic fields: polarization surveys
MHD turbulence in the ISM
Large Scale Magnetic Fields in the Galaxy
The role of MFs in star formation in the MW, normal galaxies and starburst
galaxies
Large Scale Magnetic Fields in other Galaxies
Turbulent Magnetic Field in other galaxies (normal spirals, starburst
galaxies, active galaxies)
MHD turbulence in the IGM
Magnetic Fields in the intra-cluster medium
Basic Plasmas and MHD processes (magnetic reconnection, MHD instabilities,
dynamo)
21st century Projects for cosmic MF surveys
