Lista de Discussão: Fórum da SAB Prezados Sócios O Boletim Eletrônico da SAB tem objetivo de ser um veículo informativo de rápida circulação. Os assuntos pertinentes a esse boletim podem ser classificados em três categorias principais: Informes, Oportunidades e Eventos. Por atingir a todos os sócios, frequentemente recebemos solicitações de conteúdo opinativo ou que não se enquadrem diretamente nas categorias acima. Contudo, sua relevância por vezes justificou sua inclusão no Boletim Eletrônico, embora seja desejável contar com outro veículo onde essas mensagens possam ser distribuídas. Nova política editorial do Boletim da SAB Prezados Sócios O Boletim da Sociedade Astronômica Brasileira (ISSN 0101-3440) é o periódico oficial desta sociedade. É um veículo socio-cultural, que tanto informa sobre assuntos atuais quanto informará aos que o lerem no futuro sobre o que a comunidade astronômica brasileira fazia. Visando efetivamente cumprir esta função, a partir de 2009, o Boletim passará a priorizar a publicação do seguinte conteúdo: 1. Artigos de revisão, em português 2. Revisão de conferências, colóquios e eventos científicos 3. Resenhas de livros sobre astronomia 4. Artigos de opinião sobre política científica em Astronomia 5. Artigos sobre História da Astronomia no Brasil 6. Artigos técnicos, em português, sobre instrumentos de uso da comunidade 7. Relatórios institucionais (resumo das atividades anuais dos principais departamentos de Astronomia) 8. Resumos de teses e dissertações 9. Artigos de interesse em astronomia (artigos propriamente ditos, que podem também ser notas ou comentários sobre outros artigos) 10. Resumos da Reunião Anual Os artigos de revisão (item 1) poderão ser submetidos por membros ou solicitados a membros pela Comissão Editorial. Os convites não necessariamente se limitarão aos pesquisadores seniores, mas podem se estender a pós-doutores ou mesmo a doutorandos de reconhecida competência em sua respectiva área de pesquisa. Revisões de conferências, colóquios e eventos científicos (item 2) correspondem a resenhas, em que um participante ou organizador de conferência faz um resumo do que aconteceu na reunião, para que leitores potencialmente interessados que não tenham estado presentes pudessem tomar ciência do evento e dos principais momentos da discussão científica. É um tipo de artigo de comentários, listando fatos com a ótica pessoal do especialista presente ao evento. Os relatórios institucionais (item 7) podem ser opcionalmente enviados à Comissão Editorial, para publicação no Boletim, bienalmente, pelo chefe de departamento ou responsável pela instituição, de acordo com especificações a ser divulgadas em breve. Os demais item são autoexplicativos. Todos os artigos deverão ser aprovados por relatores ad hoc indicados pela Comissão Editorial. Esclarecemos que o Boletim não tem por finalidade competir ou servir de substituto à publicação de artigos em revistas internacionais arbitradas. A política editorial acima explora um conteúdo que não tem sido sistematicamente registrado por membros desta Sociedade, embora configure-se como produção científica e tenha especial importância para o arquivo da memória de atuação profissional da Sociedade Astronômica Brasileira e da pesquisa em Astronomia no país. Eleven PhD Positions to research 'Rocky Planets Around Cool Stars' – RoPACS (Comunicado por Sylvio Ferraz Mello em 05/02/09) We are seeking to appoint 11 PhD students as Early Stage Researchers on the EU FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network "Rocky Planets Around Cool Stars" (RoPACS). These positions are for 3 years and will be filled in 2 phases. There is some flexibility in the starting dates, with the phase-1 PhD projects preferably starting before May 2009, and phase-2 PhD projects starting no later than the end of November 2009. The network PhD students will be trained through a combination of local and network wide research/training experience, but will be employed at one of the following network institutions: * University of Hertfordshire (UH), UK * Institute of Astronomy (IoA), Cambridge, UK * Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC), Spain * Max-Planck Institute fuer extraterrestriche Physik (MPE), Munich, Germany * Laboratory of Stellar Astronomy and Exoplanets (LAEX-CAB, formerly LAEFF), Madrid, Spain * Main Astronomical Observatory (MAO), Kiev, Ukraine PhD students will do research on the search for and study of extra-solar planets around cool stars. By hunting around these relatively small lower-mass stars, planet-hunting techniques become more sensitive to smaller lower-mass planets that could be rocky Earth-like worlds. The network will analyse new transit survey data, build on existing follow-up techniques to characterise cool star planets with the Doppler wobble (radial velocity) method, and explore further characterisation through observational and theoretical analysis. RoPACS will also investigate future space-based technology for studying extra-solar planets, in collaboration with its industrial partner Astrium. Researchers will be paid a generous salary to cover living allowance, mobility and travel. Funds will also be available for the researchers to participate in the European-wide training and research events of the Network. Applicants can originate from anywhere in the world, except the country of their chosen host institute, and cannot have resided in the host country for more than 12 months in the previous three years. Requirements for doctoral study vary with country. In general, applicants must have achieved (or be expecting to achieve) a Masters degree in astrophysics or a related subject. The required level of Masters exam/thesis study may be assessed as an eligibility criterion for German and Spanish positions. For UH positions, applications may also be made with a first degree equivalent to BSc (first or upper second class) or MPhys. Review of applications by the Network will continue until the positions are filled, with priority given to applications received before 28 February and 31 August for phase-1 and phase-2 PhD projects respectively. Summer School Alpbach 2009. Exoplanets: Discovering and characterizing Earth type planets (Comunicado por Alberto Krone-Martins em 10/02/09) The Summer School Alpbach 2009 (Austria, July 21-30) will address innovative mission concepts aiming to increase our knowledge of extrasolar planets. Those future missions will help us to increase the number of planetary systems known and will be able to tell us more about the physical characteristics of the planets themselves. Particular emphasis will be given to the study of Earth-like planets found in the habitable zone of other stars since these planets could harbour life.
