Bolsa de doutorado em Física na CUA (Comunicado por Duilia De Mello em 11/12/08) I am writing to advertise an opportunity in our department at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, for qualified graduate students. The Hubbard Graduate Student Fellowship provides a 2-year stipend and tuition. Students who have a combined GRE of at least 1350 and a GPA of 3.5 will be considered. The Institute for Astrophysics and Computational Science within the Physics department includes over 30 PhD researchers, located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and Naval Research Laboratory, providing a rich research environment for our graduate students. Currently, we have students doing research in the following areas: galaxy evolution, AGN physics, solar system, solar physics, and proto-planetary formation. The Hubbard fellowship provides a unique means for a motivated student to fast-track their involvement in research. Candidates will be selected in March 2009. Please distribute this announcement among your seniors in physics and astronomy. If you have any questions on the details of the fellowship, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you and your students. Email demello@cua.edu for information and attach a CV and GRE grades (if available). ======================================================================== 2. Competição de pesquisa estudantil sobre o Asteróide 2029 Apophis (Comunicado por Thais Mothé-Diniz em 11/12/08) RESEARCH STUDENT COMPETITION "ENCOUNTER 2029: STUDENTS INVESTIGATING APOPHIS" What is the competition? In 2029 asteroid 99942 Apophis (2004 MN4) will flyby the Earth at a distance of about 32 000 km. This is closer than any known past or future approach by natural objects larger than about 10 meters (other than objects that have entered Earth's atmosphere). After a resonant flyby, the asteroid will then return towards Earth with two potential impact dates between 2036 and 2037. This close encounter with 99942 Apophis in 2029 will provide a window of opportunity for scientific and technological research. Research students are encouraged to think about innovative ways in which this close encounter can be utilised to increase our scientific and/or technological knowledge of small bodies and their surrounding environment. Papers will be welcomed on a variety of subjects that can be related to the theme of Apophis and small body encounters. Subjects for papers might include, but are not limited to; modelling of the small asteroid environment and related effects (e.g. plasma environment, dust, solar radiation, Yarkovsky effect); geology and geophysics of small bodies, dynamics and control related to Apophis-like rendezvous and interception scenarios; innovative deflection strategies and mission architectures, etc. The best student paper will be awarded a prize. Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Positions at the University of Florida (comunicado por Sylvio Ferraz-Mello em 11/12/08) Dear Colleagues, We wanted to bring to your attention astronomy and astrophysics research opportunities for potential graduate students and postdocs at the University of Florida (UF). In particular the Department of Astronomy (www.astro.ufl.edu /) has been developing rapidly in a number of research areas. On the instrumentation side three major instruments are being or have been completed this year: GTC-CANARICAM, Gemini(South)-FLAMINGOS2, SDSS-MARVELS. On the observational side we are a partner with Spain and Mexico in the new 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias, which will begin scientific operations in early 2009, and are leading large programs using these and other facilities to search for and characterize exoplanets and survey star-forming regions, the Galactic center, Local Group and high redshift galaxies and active galactic nuclei. The theoretical program is developing in parallel with these efforts, and has been particularly strengthened by our new partnership in the SDSS-III, a major upgrade of our computing facilities, and a vibrant visitor program. Applications for the graduate program are due Jan 31st 2009. At least two postdoctoral positions are open, including the Theoretical Astrophysics Fellowship(s) (due Jan 1st, AAS Job Reg. 25128) and a Postdoctoral Position in Extrasolar Planet Searches (due Jan 31st, AAS Job Reg. 25268). If you know of potential candidates for these positions, please encourage them to consider applying to UF. Sincerely, Jonathan Tan Eric Ford Ata Sarajedini ======================================================================== 4.
