POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN SOLAR/STELLAR PHYSICS (Comunicado por Marcelo Borges) The High Altitude Observatory (HAO) in Boulder, Colorado announces its 2009 postdoctoral fellowship program. Scientists at HAO conduct research related to solar/stellar interiors and variability (including asteroseismology), the lower solar atmosphere, corona and heliosphere, and terrestrial and planetary atmospheres, ionospheres and magnetospheres. Projects involving radiative transfer, hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, radiation hydrodynamics, plasma physics and other topics are pursued both out of fundamental physical interest and for their application to the above areas of research. Successful applicants will be expected to pursue research in collaboration with members of the scientific staff and other long-term visitors in these and related areas. Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for a maximum of 2 years beginning in September or October; a degree of flexibility is possible on the specific times of arrival and departure. Fellows are expected to work at HAO in Boulder, Colorado, with the exception of time spent participating in field research and observing programs. Fellows will have access to the HAO Linux/Unix computers, NCAR supercomputer systems, and the HAO and NCAR libraries and data archives. Fellows will receive a salary commensurate with NCAR postdoctoral rates. The current annual rate is $53,000 in the first year and $55,000 in the second year. A travel budget of up to $1,500 per year is also normally available. In accordance with NCAR policy, benefits include health insurance, vacation time and retirement contributions, and NCAR will provide assistance in finding Boulder accommodations. Please see http://www.hao.ucar.edu/people/visitors/postdoc.php for complete application details. The deadline for applications is January 5, 2009. ================================================= 2. IAU SYMPOSIUM 263 "ICY BODIES IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM" (Comunicado por Thaís Mothé-Diniz) IAU SYMPOSIUM 263 "ICY BODIES IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM" Rio de Janeiro, 3-7 August 2009 An interdisciplinary meeting aimed to discuss the geochemistry, physics, morphology (roundish versus irregular shapes), and internal differentiation of the icy bodies of the solar system (comets, trans- neptunian objects, satellites of the outer planets, Centaurs, Trojans and transition objects in the asteroid belt), their accretion and transport within the different regions of the solar system, from near- Earth to the Oort cloud, and their suitability for sustaining and delivering life forms. Deadline for receipt of registrations and grant applications : 1 March 2009, applying directly at the web site: http://www.astronomy2009.com.br/registration.html More information about this symposium can be found at: http://www.astronomia.edu.uy/congresos/symp263/ ================================================= 3. POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS IN THEORETICAL ASTROPHYSICS AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY (Comunicado por Marcelo Borges) Job Description: Several postdoctoral positions in theoretical astrophysics may be available in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern University, starting in Fall 2009. The Theoretical Astrophysics Group at Northwestern currently includes Profs. Vicky Kalogera, Fred Rasio and Ron Taam, eight postdocs (Chris Deloye, John Fregeau, Loren Hoffman, Ilya Mandel, Soko Matsumura, Stefan Umbreit, Marc van de Sluys, and Bart Willems), as well as ten graduate students. We are interested in candidates with prior experience in any area of theoretical/computational astrophysics, but particularly the following: extrasolar planetary systems, compact objects, X-ray binaries, gravitational wave astrophysics and data analysis, and dense star cluster dynamics. Applications from women and minority candidates are especially encouraged. Applicants should send their CV, list of publications, a brief statement of research interests (up to four pages), and arrange for a minimum of three recommendation letters to be received by December 1, 2008. Email submissions are preferred. Later applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
