1. TENURE-TRACK ASTRONOMER POSITION AT GEMINI SOUTH

Tenure-track astronomer position at Gemini South

* Location: La Serena, Chile
* Deadline for Application: September 30, 2008

We have an immediate opening for a tenure-track astronomer position at
Gemini South in La Serena, Chile. This position requires a solid
commitment to Gemini’s mission to teach humanity about the Universe and
requires strong scientific leadership abilities.

The tenure-track astronomer is expected to maintain a strong scientific
program with excellent productivity.  The tenure-track astronomer is
additionally expected to provide scientific leadership to Gemini South
science staff.  Forty percent (40%) of the tenure-track astronomer’s
time is available for astronomical research.   The position includes a
personal research budget as well as access to staff time on both Gemini
telescopes through a peer-reviewed staff TAC.

Requirements: Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or related discipline, and
related work experience.  Substantial ground-based observing and/or
instrumentation experience is highly desirable, particularly using
modern facilities. Experience/knowledge in one or more of the following
areas is a plus:  infrared imaging, spectroscopy or multi-object
spectroscopy; adaptive optics; and high spatial resolution imaging and
coronagraphy.  Research productivity will be considered, as judged by
publication in astronomical peer-review journals.

2. ESA-GAIA: POSTDOC POSITION AVAILABLE AT OBSERVATORY OF BOLOGNA (ITALY)
   (comunicado por Alberto Martins)

The candidate should have experience in the observations, treatment 
and flux calibration of photometric and spectroscopic data. The candidate 
will work on the absolute calibration of the spectrophotometric system of 
the ESA-Gaia mission. The contract is for one year with the possibility of 
an extension of up to 4 years. The starting date will be in 
September - October 2008. The Italian official announcement and forms can

3. DR. CHRISTIAN VEILLET NO BRASIL EM JUNHO
   (comunicado por Albert Bruch)

O LNA informa que o Dr. Christian Veillet, Diretor do
Canadian-French-Hawaii Telescope - CFHT, Mauna Kea,
Havaí, estará no Brasil na semana de 2 de junho para
negociar com o LNA um acordo que garanta à comunidade
astronômica brasileira acesso a este telescópio.

Para que a comunidade possa se informar sobre o telescópio
e seus instrumentos periféricos, Dr. Christian realizará um
seminário sobre o tema: "Canadian-French-Hawaii Telescope:
Capacidades e oportunidades" nos dois maiores centros de
pesquisa astronômica no país:

Observatório Nacional: Terça-feira, dia 3 de junho, às 15:00 horas
IAG/USP: Quinta-feira, dia 5 de junho, às 14:00 horas
