THE ONASSIS FOUNDATION SCIENCE LECTURE SERIES 2008 IN PHYSICS COSMOLOGY: AN ASTROPHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE (comunicado por Alberto Martins) THE ONASSIS FOUNDATION SCIENCE LECTURE SERIES 2008 IN PHYSICS COSMOLOGY: AN ASTROPHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE Heraklion, Crete,Greece, June 30 - July 4, 2008 Dear Colleague, I would like to inform you that this year's Onassis Summer School in Physics is devoted to: "COSMOLOGY: AN ASTROPHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE". Lecturers are: John Mather (NASA, Nobel Prize 2006 in Physics), Tom Abel (Stanford University), Wayne Hu (University of Chicago), Robert Kirshner (Harvard University), Jim Peebles (Princeton University), Paul Steinhardt (Princeton University), J. Craig Wheeler (University of Texas). I would also like to inform you that the Onassis Foundation provides financial support for up to 50 Greek and 30 International qualified students (postgraduate and advanced undergraduate) for their travel and local expenses. I would like to ask you to encourage excellent students and young scientists from your institution to apply. Online application through our website http://www.forth.gr/onassis/lectures/2008-06-30/ Sincerely, Professor I. Papamastorakis Chairman of the Organizing Committee ====================================================================== 2. ===================================================================== 3. GEMINI NORTH ACCEPTING POOR WEATHER PROPOLSALS FOR 2008A (comunicado por Marilia J. Sartori) Gemini North is again accepting poor weather proposals for cloudy conditions for 2008A. In response to completion of poor weather programs in the queue, Gemini North is now inviting poor weather proposals. The specific opportunity is for observations in the RA range 9hrs - 17hrs that can be executed in CC90 conditions. Thus both science target and guide star must be able to tolerate CC90. The definition for CC90 is extinction due to clouds of 2 magnitudes or greater, and variable. Reliable guiding with the peripheral wave-front sensor (P2) at the optimum frequency requires a star brighter than R~13.5 in clear, dark skies, so in cloudy conditions we can observe only programs with R<11.5 guide-stars. For the GMOS OIWFS the same limit applies. Poor weather programs can be submitted at any time in the semester. Use the Phase I tool (http://www.gemini.edu/sciops/P1help/p1Index.html) to submit your proposal, selecting "Poor weather" from the drop down menu in the Submit tab. Such programs will be automatically placed in the Band 4 "Poor Weather Queue". *************************************************************************
