FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF IAU SYMPOSIUM 255 (comunicado por Eduardo Telles) FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF IAU SYMPOSIUM 255 Low-Metallicity Star Formation: From the First Stars to Dwarf Galaxies June 16-20, 2008 Rapallo, Genova - Liguria, Italy http://www.arcetri.astro.it/iaus255/ Although low-mass metal-poor galaxies in the local universe have often been proposed as the "primordial building blocks" in the hierarchical scenario of structure formation, several lines of evidence suggest that this may not be true. These apparent contradictions can be better debated by bringing together astronomers from heterogeneous fields including stellar populations and population synthesis, stellar evolution and the end-products of star formation, the physics and dynamics of the interstellar medium, and chemical evolution. Combining theory of metal-poor and primordial star formation with low- and high- redshift observations over a wide range of wavelengths from the X-ray to the radio will allow us to assess the viability of using local dwarf galaxies as high-redshift analogues. We aim to foster an open exchange among different astronomical communities by placing in juxtaposition, for the first time, low-redshift observational astronomers and observational cosmologists, as well as observers and theoreticians. The preliminary Scientific Program includes the following topics: * Population III and metal-free star formation    - Primordial building blocks: from dark matter halos to the first stars    - Population III stars: formation and evolution    - Population III to Population II transition: chemical and radiative feedback    - Searches for Population III and very metal-poor populations in the distant universe * Metal-poor initial mass function, stellar evolution, and star-formation histories   - Local relics of primordial star formation: the Milky Way halo and local dwarfs    - Star-formation histories at low metallicity     - Stellar evolution at low metallicity    - Low-metallicity star clusters and the IMF in metal-poor environments * Dust and gas as seeds for metal-poor star formation    - Dust in metal-poor ISM    - The gas phase in a low metallicity ISM    - Molecule formation in primordial conditions * Explosive events in low-metallicity environments: SNe and GRBs    - Supernovae and their evolution in a low-metallicity ISM    - Low-mass and metal-poor GRB host galaxies * Metal enrichment, chemical evolution, and feedback  - Chemical enrichment and feedback in low-metallicity environments:      constraints on galaxy formation and enrichment of the IGM    - Feedback and mechanical energy input in chemical and stellar evolution - Damped Ly-alpha systems as probes of chemical evolution overcosmological timescales The Symposium will take place in one of the most beautiful spots of the Ligurian coast. Located south of Genoa, Rapallo is an old charming town which lays in the inner part of the Tigullio Gulf. Since thesecond half of the 19th century, this town has been chosen by famous intellectuals, artists and poets as their favorite destination. Rapallois in an ideal position to discover the traditions, history and natureof the Ligurian territory. We are also planning a half-day excursion to the Cinque Terre. Transportation from/to Genoa and from/to Pisa will be providedby the Organizers. More detailed information will be soon available on our web site. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI AT THE IAC   (comunicado por Ruth Gruenwald) Postdoctoral position in Active Galactic Nuclei at the IAC ------------------------------------------------------------ The IAC (Tenerife, Spain) is opening ONE postdoctoral position in the group of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), within the framework of the project: [WINDOWS- 1252?]"Parsec scale studies of centers of galaxies using very high spatial resolution [WINDOWS-1252?]techniques". Research topics at the IAC include most areas of astrophysics: cosmology and the structure of the Universe, galactic astrophysics, the structure and evolution of stars, the interstellar medium, solar physics, telescope design and construction, high spatial resolution techniques, infrared and optical instrumentation, and astronomical space projects. The IAC also leads the scientific teams responsible for the Day One instruments of the 10.4 m GTC segmented telescope( http://www.gtc.iac.es), as well as their scientific exploitation. Further information about the IAC's research programme, its Observatories and the GTC is available on the IAC's Web page(http://www.iac.es/). One of the main projects in the AGN group focuses on high spatial resolution studies of the nuclear region of the nearest galaxies down to scales of few parsecs. These studies relay on adaptive optics and interferometric observations which are routinely providing sub-arcsecond resolution in the near to mid IR range. The studies are further complemented with information from radio interferometry and X-rays. Other research interests in the group include the physics of jets and hot-spots in radio galaxies and spectropolarimetry, and the development of IR instrumentation. We are investing substantial effort in the development of the first adaptive-optics 3D spectrograph, FRIDA( FRIDA@IAC), to be installed at GTC. The planning for the science exploitation of FRIDA is one of our major activities. Duties: Depending on [WINDOWS-1252?]candidate's background and experience, as postdoctoral researcher the selected candidate is expected to lead the radio and IR interferometric programs on active galaxies conducted at the group. As a member of the group, the successful candidate is expected to propose competitive programs that will make use of the FRIDA guaranteed time granted to this group, as well of other instruments atGTC. The selected candidate will be based at the [WINDOWS-1252?]IAC's headquarters in La Laguna, and the IAC will provide the corresponding facilities and resources. Valued experience: Astronomers with a theoretical or observational background on the topic are encouraged to apply. A background on the field of radio and / or IR interferometry will be an asset. Duration: The contract will start after the Final Resolution of the call, starting day is negotiable but the duration will be till 30September 2010. Further extension is possible but not guaranteed. Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 32.405,56 euros per annum, subject to up to 20% tax and Social Security deductions. Medical insurance under the Spanish National Health Service will be provided, and will also cover your accompanying partner and children. Non-UE citizens: If you are citizen of a country not belonging to the European Union, you are not allowed to sign any contract with the IAC until you obtain the compulsory documentation required to live and work in Spain (Visa, Residence Permit, Exception to the Working Licence). Please contact the Spanish consulate in your country for details. Compulsory documentation to submit: The Application Form (WORD, PDF) Curriculum Vitae with list of publications, a brief report on your research/technical activity, and a covering letter telling us about the skills you can bring to the job. A photocopy of your PhD Degree or certificate. A photocopy of your Passport. At least two letters of recommendation must be sent(preferably by email: secinv@iac.es) directly by researchers or professionals familiar with your work, to the Secretariat of the IAC's Research Division. NOTE: Applicants who prepared their thesis at the IAC must present accreditations of having spent one continuous year,or 18 accumulated months, in other research institutes. All the above documentation must be sent, preferably by email, to the Secretariat of the Research Division, secinv@iac.es. Postal address: Instituto de Astrofísicade Canarias, C/ Via Láctea s/n, E-38205 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain. IMPORTANT: If the documentation is sent by post, the application form must be stamped by an postal office with the date you sent it (the applicant should keep a stamped copy). The stamp on the envelope will NOT be accepted. Further information can be requested, preferably by email, to the Secretariat of the Research Division, secinv@iac.es.
