POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION IN STAR FORMATION 3. POSIÇÕES PARA ASTRÔNOMOS NO GEMINI 4. FIRST PLATA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON ASTRONOMY AND GEOPHYSICS ************************************************************************** 1. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN NUCLEAR ASTROPHYSICS AR ARGONNE (comunicado por Marcelo Borges) Nuclear Theory for Supernovae Applications are invited for one Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in theoretical nuclear astrophysics in the Theory Group of the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory, beginning in *JANUARY, 2008*. This appointment will complement our research into the origin of heavy elements in the universe, which is a key problem of longstanding that requires collaboration between nuclear physics and astrophysics. An accurate description of stellar nucleosynthesis demands further investigation of supernovae, neutron stars and the physics of dense nuclear matter. These studies are material to the drive for an exotic beam facility, which will enable the terrestrial measurement of reaction rates that are expected to play an important role in nucleosynthesis. Argonne has a broad-ranging theory programme in nuclear and hadron physics, and hadron and nuclear astrophysics, and a broad range of activities in experimental nuclear astrophysics. Researchers work in close collaboration with the ASC/Alliances Center for Astrophysical Thermonuclear Flashes at the University of Chicago, with computational physicists in Mathematics and Computational Science at Argonne, and with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA), with branches at Argonne, the University of Chicago, Michigan State University, and the University of Notre Dame. Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae and a one-page statement of research interests to: * C.D. Roberts Group Leader, Theory Astrophysics Postdoc Physics Division, Bldg 203 Argonne, IL 60439-4843 USA email: cdroberts@anl.gov phone: (630) 252 4095 fax: (630) 252 3903 and also arrange for three signed letters of reference to be sent to this address. Applications and letters of reference by EMail are acceptable if supplied in plain text or PDF format. =========================================================== 2. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION IN STAR FORMATION (comunicado por Alberto Krone-Martins) Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the University of Geneva (Geneva Observatory and the affiliated ISDC) in Switzerland to start as soon as possible. The successful candidate will be member of the research group led by Prof. Marc Audard in the field of star formation (http://isdc.unige.ch/youngstars). The group's research interests focus on the study of star formation through multi-wavelength observations (from X-rays to radio). Candidates with experience in (sub-)millimeter observations of star forming regions, jets and molecular outflows, and disks are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications from candidates with theoretical expertise in the interpretation of (sub-)millimeter data are also welcome. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with the group and will also be encouraged to pursue independent research. The appointment is for one year and may be extended to a second year, should additional funds become available. Salary ranges from about 64,000 to 73,000 Swiss Francs, depending on experience. Funds for research expenses and travel are available as well. Candidates should send a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a description of research interests and plans. They should also arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent by e-mail (preferred) or directly to the address below. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Contact and submission address: Prof. Marc Audard (Marc.Audard@obs.unige.ch), ISDC & Geneva Observatory, Ch. d'Ecogia 16, 1290 Versoix, Switzerland. ================================================================ 3. FIRST PLATA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON ASTRONOMY AND GEOPHYSICS (comunicado por Asociación Argentina de Astronomía) First La Plata International School on Astronomy and Geophysics. COMPACT OBJECTS AND THEIR EMISSION March 10-14, 2008. La Plata, Argentina. ****IMPORTANT**** DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: NOVEMBER 15th, 2007 NEWS: PROGRAM / ACCOMODATION ***************** The Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas will start a series of international schools on current topics of Astronomy and Geophysics. These schools will be primarily aimed at introducing advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as young researchers to very challenging issues of contemporary research. Each school faculty will be composed of widely recognized researchers in the field. Students will have ample opportunity to interact with Professors and time will be allocated for student´s presentations. The first school of the series will be devoted to "Compact Objects and Their Emission". Objects like white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes give rise to a varied and rich phenomenology that ranges from the compact binary X-ray emission to complexities of spectral energy distributions of microquasars, AGNs and gamma-ray bursts. The School courses and lectures will provide a comprehensive introduction to all these phenomena and to the latest developments in this fast-evolving field. English is the official language of the School. Faculty The faculty of the school consists of the following Professors: Felix A. Aharonian (DIAS - Dublin / MPIfK - Heidelberg) Leandro G. Althaus (FCAG - La Plata) Sergio A. Cellone (FCAG - La Plata) Sylvain Chaty (AIM - Paris) Chuck D. Dermer (NRL - Washington) Daniel O. Gómez (UBA - Buenos Aires) I. Félix Mirabel (ESO - Santiago) Josep María Paredes (UB - Barcelona) Gustavo E. Romero (IAR - Villa Elisa / FCAG - La Plata) Héctor Vucetich (FCAG - La Plata) Dean of the School: Gustavo E. Romero (IAR - Villa Elisa / FCAG - La Plata) Program the full program is now available at http://school2008.fcaglp.unlp.edu.ar/program/ The topics covered by the courses and lectures will include: White Dwarfs (Althaus) Neutron Stars (Vucetich) Black Hole Physics (Romero) Radiation Processes in Astrophysics (Aharonian) High-Energy Emission from Relativistic Outflows (Aharonian) Black Holes in the Galaxy (Paredes) Accretion Power in Compact Objects (Gómez) Microquasars (Mirabel) Obscured High-Mass X-ray Binaries (Chaty) AGNs (Cellone) Gamma-Ray Bursts (Dermer) Gamma-ray Instruments (Dermer, Paredes) There will be fifty-minute individual lectures followed by a question and answer discussion, two-lecture courses, a three-lecture course, and four-lecture courses. Lectures will start at 9 a.m. There will be coffee breaks and a lunch break with ample time for discussions with Professors. Registration School places are limited to 60. Priority will be given to participants working in the field and to those making presentation on their research. There will be a registration fee of US$ 50, which includes the cost of a book with the lectures that will be published by the Argentine Astronomical Society (A.A.A.). In order to register, candidates should send an email by November 15th to school2008@fcaglp.unlp.edu.ar with the following information: Name Affilliation PhD Supervisor name and affilliation (if applicable) Intended contribution: Oral - Poster - None Title and abstract of contribution (if applicable) In the case of undergraduate students a CV, and a recommendation letter from the supervisor or a professor (via e-mail) are required. Venue La Plata Astronomical Observatory is one of the oldest and more prestigious astronomical institutions in Latin America. It was founded in La Plata, the capital of Buenos Aires Province, in 1882, and since then it has nurtured an honourable research and teaching tradition. It is located in a green area of the city. La Plata is situated 60 km to the south of Buenos Aires City, with easy access by motorway.
