2. BOLSA MAYO GREENBERG PARA ESTUDANTES DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO

O Observatorio de Leiden (Sterrewacht Leiden, Holanda) anuncia a
abertura de processo seletivo para uma bolsa para estudantes de
pós-graduação que desejam realizar um estagio no Sterrewacht Leiden
numa das seguintes áreas de concentração:

- Astrofísica de Laboratório
- Poeira no Universo
- Formação de cometas
- Origem da Vida

Será dada preferência a candidatos provenientes de países do terceiro mundo. 
A duraçao maxima da bolsa é de 9 meses. As inscriçoes devem  ser feitas até 
15 de Novembro de 2007 e o interessado deve enviar (i) curriculum vitae 
detalhado; (ii) área de interesse e proposta de pesquisa;  (iii) 
justificativa para o pedido; (iv) duas ou tres cartas de referencia

4. POSITION FOR AN ASTRONOMER AT THE SALT 10-m TELESCOPE
    (comunicado por Alberto Krone-Martins)

The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) requires an experienced
astronomer dedicated to supporting the astronomical operations of the 
Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), a 10-m optical telescope near 
Sutherland,  some 380 km inland from the SAAO headquarters in Cape Town. 
SAAO - South Africa -  national facility for optical/IR astronomy - operates 
SALT on behalf of 13 partner  institutions of the SALT Foundation.

The applicant should hold a PhD and have postdoctoral experience in 
observational astronomy and data reduction. In addition, instrumental and/or 
software  expertise would be an advantage. The latter might include 
experience with data  reductions (the SALT data pipeline is being developed 
in Python/PyRAF), writing web  based and Java software and maintaining 
information pages on the web and software. SALT Astronomers are based in 
Cape Town, but will be expected to regularly conduct service observing 
(about one week in six) on SALT, which is a queue-scheduled telescope. SALT 
related duties consist of preparing, scheduling and carrying out of 
observations on behalf of the SALT users, performing on-line and pipeline 
data reductions, writing software and  liasing with users. A generous amount 
of personal research time and resources, using SALT and other SAAO 
facilities, will also be available.

The position will initially be for a period of three years, with the 
possibility of an extension. The salary package will be commensurate with 
qualifications  and experience.
