HIPPARCOS, THE NEW REDUCTION OF THE RAW DATA (comunicado por Alberto Krone-Martins) Hipparcos, the New Reduction of the Raw Data Series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library , Vol. 350 Leeuwen, Floor van 2007, Approx. 480 p., Hardcover ISBN: 978-1-4020-6341-1 The new reduction of the Hipparcos data presents a very significant improvement in the overall reliability of the astrometric catalogue derived from this mission. Improvements by up to a factor 4 in the accuracies for in particular brighter stars have been obtained. This has been achieved mainly through careful study of the satellite dynamics, and incorporating results from these studies in the attitude modelling. Data correlations, caused by attitude-modelling errors in the original catalogue, have all but disappeared. This book provides overviews of the new reduction as well as on the use of the Hipparcos data in a variety of astrophysical implementations. A range of new results, like cluster distances and luminosity calibrations, is presented. The Hipparcos data provide a unique opportunity for the study of satellite dynamics. The orbit covered a wide range of altitudes, showing in detail the different torques acting on the satellite. One part of the book details these studies and their impact on the new reduction. It furthermore presents an extensive summary on a wide range of spacecraft and payload calibrations, which provide a detailed record of the conditions under which these unique Hipparcos data have been obtained. The book is accompanied by a DVD with the new catalogue and the underlying data. http://www.springer.com/dal/home/new+%26+forthcoming+titles+%28default%29?SGWID=1-40356-22-173741445-0 =========================================================================== 2. =========================================================================== 4. ESO FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME 2007/2008 (comunicado por Marcelo Borges) The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere awards several postdoctoral fellowships each year. The goal of these fellowships is to offer young scientists opportunities and facilities to enhance their research programmes by facilitating close contact between young astronomers and the activities and staff at one of the world's foremost observatories. With ALMA becoming operational in a few years, ESO offers ALMA Fellowships to complement its regular fellowship programme. Applications by young astronomers with expertise in mm/sub-mm astronomy are encouraged. In Garching, the fellowships start with an initial contract of one year followed by a two-year extension (3 years total). The fellows spend up to 25% of their time on support or development activities in the area of instrumentation, operations support, archive/virtual observatory, VLTI, ALMA, ELT, public affairs or science operations at the Observatory in Chile. In Chile, the fellowships are granted for one year initially with an extension of three additional years (4 years total). During the first three years, the fellows are assigned to one of the operation groups on Paranal, La Silla or APEX/ALMA. Fellows contribute to the operations at a level of 80 nights per year at the Observatory and 35 days per year at the Santiago Office. During the fourth year there is no functional work and several options are provided. The fellow may be hosted by a Chilean institution (and will thus have access to all telescopes in Chile via the Chilean observing time). Alternatively, she/he may choose to spend the fourth year either at ESO's Astronomy Centre in Santiago, or at the ESO Headquarters in Garching, or at any institute of astronomy/astrophysics in an ESO member state. All fellows have ample opportunities for scientific collaboration within ESO, both in Garching and Santiago. For more information about ESO's astronomical research activities please consult http://www.eso.org. A list of current ESO staff and fellows and their research interests can be found at http://www.eso.org/science. Additionally, the ESO Headquarter in Munich, Germany hosts the Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility, and is situated in the immediate neighbourhood of the Max-Planck-Institutes for Astrophysics and for Extraterrestrial Physics and only a few kilometres away from the Observatory of the Ludwig-Maximilian University. In Chile, fellows have the opportunity to collaborate with the rapidly expanding Chilean astronomical community in a growing partnership. We offer an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary (tax-free), comprehensive social benefits, and provide financial support for relocating families. Furthermore, an expatriation allowance as well as some other allowances may be added.
