YOUNG SCIENTIST'S PRIZE IN ASTROPHYSICS (comunicado por Odylio D. Aguiar) YOUNG SCIENTIST'S PRIZE IN ASTROPHYSICS The Commission on Astrophysics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics solicits nominations for its 2008 prize for an outstanding young astrophysicist, to be presented in December, 2008 at the 24th "Texas" Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics in Victoria, BC, Canada. Candidates for the prize must not have completed more than 8 years of post-PhD research and related activities at the time the of the award. The prize will consist of an IUPAP Medal, travel expenses to the meeting where it is presented, and possibly a small cash award. The winner will probably be asked to give a short talk about the work for which the prize is awarded at the meeting. Nominations can come from any astrophysicist who knows the nominee's work well. A nomination should consist of a letter explaining the nominee's qualifications, a complete CV and list of publications, and two letters of support, at least one of which must come from someone who is not at the nominee's institution, is not a past mentor, and is not a frequent co- author or other close collaborator. Materials must arrive by March 1, 2008 for full consideration. Nominations should be sent to the Acting Chair and the Secretary of the Commision and to the Chair of the Selection Committee Acting Chair: M. Victoria Fonseca, Dept. Fisica Atomica, Molecular y Nuclear, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, E-28040 Madrid, Spain, fonseca@gae.ucm.es Commission Secretary: Patricia Whitelock, South African Astronomical Observatory , PO Box 9, 7935 Obervatory, South Africa, paw@saao.ac.za Selection Committee Chair: Virginia Trimble, Physics Dept, Univ of California Irvine CA 92697-4575, USA, vtrimble@uci.edu The first, 2006, prize was awarded to Marta Burgay of Italy, for discovery and characterization of the first double pulsar. She received the award and spoke at the December 2006 "Texas" Symposium in Melbourne, Australia. ========================================================================= 3. MAGNETIC FIELDS IN THE UNIVERSE II: SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT (comunicado por Elisabete M. de Gouveia Dal Pino) MAGNETIC FIELDS IN THE UNIVERSE II: SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT "REGISTRATION ONLINE IS NOW AVAILABLE" ------ We are pleased to invite you to the conference: "MAGNETIC FIELDS IN THE UNIVERSE II: from Laboratory and Stars to the Primordial Universe", which will be held in Cozumel, Mexico from January 28th to February 1st, 2008. More info in: http://www.astroscu.unam.mx/~mfu2 ------ In view of the success of the meeting "Magnetic Fields in the Universe: from Laboratory and Stars to Primordial Structures", held in Angra dos Reis (Brazil) in December 2004. (http://proceedings.aip.org/proceedings/confproceed/784.jsp) A second edition is being organized, this time on the Mexican Caribbean, in the island of Cozumel, from January 28th to February 1st, 2008. SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE The scientific aim of the conference is to provide a natural continuation to the first edition, putting forward the most recent advances of theoretical and numerical studies, as well as new evidence gathered from observations. The main topics of the meeting will be: * Space plasmas * Solar and stellar plasmas * Magnetic Fields in star formation and stellar structure and evolution * Magnetized Interstellar Medium * Magnetic fields in compact objects and accretion disks * Magnetized jets, outflows and winds * Galactic magnetic field * Magnetic field effects in galaxies and active galactic nuclei * Magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies * Intergalactic magnetic fields * Magnetic fields in the early universe * MHD instabilities in astrophysical sources * Basic plasma processes * Turbulence, Magnetic Reconnection, Dynamo Processes PROGRAM: The conference will consist in invited talks on themes of general interest, a limited number of selected contributed oral presentations, and poster sessions on more specific topics. Poster contributions will be exhibited for the entire duration of the conference with two special sessions devoted to them, preceded by a invited review to give highlights and promote discussion. The Organizers ==================================================== 4. XMM-NEWTON ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY (AO-7) (comunicado por Raimundo Lopes) Letter of invitation by the Director of the ESA Scientific Programme Dear Colleague, I am very pleased to invite you to respond to the seventh "Announcement of Opportunity" to submit proposals for observations to be performed with the XMM-Newton observatory. XMM-Newton is the second cornerstone of ESA's Horizon 2000 Science Programme. It was launched by an Ariane 5 launcher on the 10th of December 1999 and offers astronomers a unique opportunity to perform high throughput non-dispersive spectroscopic imaging in the energy range from 0.2 keV to 12 keV (European Photon Imaging Camera; EPIC) and medium resolution dispersive spectroscopy (Reflection Grating Spectrometer; RGS) in the energy range from 0.4 keV to 2.2 keV. In addition it provides simultaneous optical/UV observations with a co-aligned telescope (Optical Monitor; OM). This Announcement solicits proposals to be carried out in the period from May 2008 to May 2009. Proposers from all over the world are welcome to participate. All proposals will be subject to independent peer review by the XMM-Newton Observing Time Allocation Committee (OTAC). Potential proposers are expected to prepare and submit proposals in electronic form, by the deadline given below, using the XMM-Newton Remote Proposal Submission (RPS) software. The documentation for this Announcement is available via the Internet at: http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/AO7/ The appendix to this announcement lists the relevant documents and explains in detail how to access them. I would appreciate it if you would distribute the attached information at your home institute. The key milestones for this Announcement are: Announcement of Opportunity 28 August 2007 Due date for Proposals 05 October 2007 (12:00 UT) Final OTAC approved program late December 2007 I invite you to submit your proposals and wish you success in using the XMM-Newton observatory. Yours sincerely, Prof. D. Southwood Director ESA Scientific Programme *************************************************************************
