1. POSTDOC POSITION ON EXTRASOLAR PLANETS

Postdoc position  on Extrasolar planets in the Planet and Star Formation
Department at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg, Germany.

The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany
invites applications for a postdoc  position in extrasolar planets. The
successful applicant is expected to work on the Pan-Planets project, a
transit search for extrasolar planets with a camera of 7 square degrees
field of view mounted on the 1.8m Pan-STARRS telescope, located at Lure
Observatory on Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii
(http://pan-starrs.ifa.hawaii.edu/public/). The applicant will analyze the
data to search for extrasolar planets of Jupiter-type.  The PhD duration
is three years.

The MPIA is a world-wide renown center for excellence in astronomical
research and in the design and construction of instruments. The MPIA
offers access to a wide range of facilities, including ESO and guaranteed
time at the Calar Alto Observatory, the ESO/MPG 2.2m telescope at the La
Silla Observatory, Chile, as well as the LBT in Arizona, USA. MPIA is a
member of the Pan-STARRS collaboration.

Applicants should have a background in Astronomy, computer skills, and
preferentially experience in analysing large data sets. A CV,  a statement
of research interests and accomplishments, and three letters of
recommendation, should be submitted by 31 October 2007 to the address

2. DOUTORADO EM FÍSICA & ASTRONOMIA APROVADO NA UNIVAP
   (comunicado por Gabriel Rodrigues Hickel)

  O Grupo de Física & Astronomia da Universidade do Vale
do Paraíba (UNIVAP), em São José dos Campos-SP, tem o prazer
de anunciar à comunidade astronômica brasileira a aprovação pela
CAPES (conceito 4) do novo curso de Doutorado em Física & Astronomia,
que terá início em 2008. Esta aprovação vem coroar o esforço da UNIVAP
em aprimorar seus quadros de pesquisa e pós-graduação, contratando
7 astrofísicos doutores nos últimos 5 anos (4 contratações em 2007).
O grupo é diversificado (15 pesquisadores em 6 linhas de pesquisa),
com bom nível de publicação, atuação destacada junto aos grandes
telescópios ópticos destinados à comunidade astronômica brasileira
e é o maior em uma instituição de cunho privado. O mestrado em
Física & Astronomia da UNIVAP já formou 10 mestres em 3 anos
(início em 2004), sendo 2 na área de Astronomia. Atualmente,
as áreas de pesquisa contempladas em Astrofísica são formação
estelar, variáveis cataclísmicas, dinâmica de sistemas estelares,
dinâmica de asteróides, física solar e abundâncias estelares.
