1. PhD STUDY AND POSTDOC POSITIONS

               PhD Study and Postdoc Positions

European Leadership in Space Astrometry (ELSA) is a Marie Curie Research
Training Network funded by the EU's 6th Framework Programme. The aim
is to develop new theoretical understanding and practical analysis tools
for ESA's space astrometry mission Gaia (http://www.rssd.esa.int/GAIA),
to be launched in 2011. The network, coordinated by Lund Observatory
(Sweden), consists of leading research groups in 12 countries.

We seek candidates for 9 PhD study fellowships (appointed for 3 or
4 years) and 5 postdoc fellowships (2 years).

Candidates for the PhD study fellowhips are invited to submit
applications (by e-mail) not later than 15 April 2007. Please
refer to the ELSA webpages (http://www.astro.lu.se/ELSA) for
detailed instructions.

We also invite potential postdoc candidates to visit our webpages for
further information about these positions.

2. ESAC FACULTY WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT
    X-RAYS FROM NEARBY GALAXIES

ESAC Faculty Workshop Announcement: "X-rays from Nearby Galaxies"

The Faculty of the European Space Astronomy Centre is organising a
3-day workshop to take place at ESAC, near Madrid, Spain, from the
5th to the 7th of September 2007.

The workshop is intended to provide a forum for discussion of the
latest results from studies of X-ray emission from nearby galaxies.
By summarizing the present status of this field and identifying the
most critical unsolved problems we hope to ignite new ideas on how
to use the current generation of satellites for successful X-ray
studies of nearby galaxies and define which follow-up observations
will be most useful in enhancing our knowledge of these systems.
This will also highlight the instrumental requirements for X-ray
studies of nearby galaxies with future missions.

Foundation postdoctoral Fellowship 2007.

4. SOAR - CHAMADA DE PROPOSTAS - 2007B

SOAR - Chamada para envio de propostas de observação
SEMESTRE 2007B (01/08/07 - 31/01/08)
DATA LIMITE - 15 de abril de 2007 às 24:00 hrs de Brasília

A Comissão de Programas do SOAR informa que está aberta a chamada para o
envio de propostas para observações a serem realizadas com o Telescópio
SOAR durante o semestre 2007B. A previsão é que de 50% do tempo disponível
seja dedicado a observações de ciência, o que equivale a cerca de 28
noites para o Brasil. Dois instrumentos serão oferecidos durante 2007B: o
Imageador Óptico do SOAR (SOI) e o espectrógrafo e imageador infravermelho
OSIRIS. Informações sobre a configuração e funcionamento desses
instrumentos podem ser obtidas diretamente das páginas do SOAR ou do LNA.

As observações serão feitas, em sua grande maioria, em modo de serviço. No
entanto, a Comissão prevê alocar até 30% do tempo disponível para o Brasil
(8 noites) em modo remoto. Programas que solicitem esse último modo
precisam justificar sua escolha, sendo que a duração mínima de cada
programa não pode ser inferior a uma noite.

A data limite para o recebimento das propostas é 15 de abril de 2007, às
24:00 h (horário de Brasília). O formulário para a elaboração dos pedidos
e as instruções para seu preenchimento estarão disponíveis on-line a partir
de 23 de março de 2007.
