NEW QUESTS IN STELLAR ASTROPHYSICS II: UV PROPERTIES OF EVOLVED STELLAR POPULATIONS (comunicado por Dimitri Alexei Gadotti) New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II: Ultraviolet Properties of Evolved Stellar Populations April 16 - 20, 2007 - Puerto Vallarta, Mexico http://www.inaoep.mx/~puerto07 We are pleased to announce the second Puerto Vallarta conference on "New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics". Five years ago we organized the first meeting aimed at stressing the importance of stellar physics to understand the properties of stellar systems at different scales. We now want to focus on the UV interval to review our current knowledge on the properties of evolved stellar populations. This would be a unique opportunity to collect an up-to-date view of the outcomes from various space missions, from the long-lived IUE to current facilities such as GALEX and FUSE. This fresh panorama will undoubtedly impact on the preparation of future missions such as the World Space Observatory. The conference is also motivated by the recent access to the rest-frame UV light of distant red galaxies, gained through large optical facilities. This driveway has derived in a renewed interest on the stars that presumably dominate or have important effects on the integrated UV characteristics of evolved nearby objects. The conference intends to convene scientists interested in some of the main aspects associated with the ultraviolet properties of old populations. Among the main topics to be discussed are: - Breaking the Age-Metallicity Degeneracy - Nature and Effects of UV-bright Evolved Stars (BSS, EHB, etc) - Recent Advances in Populations Synthesis @ UV Wavelengths - The UV (observed and theoretical) Spectra of Late and Intermediate Type Stars (A,F,G and K) - Stellar Populations in High z Red Galaxies - The UV up-turn in Ellipticals revisited - Mid-UV Morphology of Globulars and Local Ellipticals - Ultraviolet Instrumentation for the Future Scientific Organizing Committee Carlos Allende-Prieto (USA) Alessandro Bressan (Italy) Lucio Buson (Italy) Alberto Buzzoni (Italy) Leticia Carigi (MEX) Miguel Chavez (MEX-Chair) Ana Ines Gomez (Spain) Rosa Amelia Gonzalez (MEX) Jay Holberg (USA) Raul Jimenez (USA) Maria Lucia Malagnini (Italy) Patrick McCarthy (USA) Ricardo Schiavon (USA) Local Organizing Committee Emanuele Bertone (Chair), Daniel Rosa-Gonzalez, Miguel Chavez Puerto Vallarta is a well-known beach resort of Mexico, on the Pacific coast. It enjoys a very pleasant weather in April. If you are interested to receive further information please fill-out the pre-registration web-form at http://www.inaoep.mx/~puerto07. Check this conference web site for important updates and for details on the venue. This conference is sponsored by the Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica (INAOE) and the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG), Mexico. We look forward to seeing you in Puerto Vallarta! XMM - NEWTON OBSERVATORY - PROPOSALS (comunicado por RAIMUNDO LOPES DE OLIVEIRA FILHO) XMM-Newton is the second cornerstone of ESA's Horizon 2000 Science Programme. It was launched by an Ariane 5 launcher on the 10th of December 1999 and offers astronomers a unique opportunity to perform high throughput non-dispersive spectroscopic imaging in the energy range from 0.2 keV to 12 keV (European Photon Imaging Camera; EPIC) and medium resolution dispersive spectroscopy (Reflection Grating Spectrometer; RGS) in the energy range from 0.4 keV to 2.2 keV. In addition it provides simultaneous optical/UV observations with a co-aligned telescope (Optical Monitor; OM). The documentation for this Announcement is available via the internet at: http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/AO6/ Announcement of Opportunity 28 August 2006 Due date for Proposals 06 October 2006 (12:00 UT) Final OTAC approved programme late December 2006 Maiores informações: http://xmm.vilspa.esa.es/external/xmm_news/news_list/xmm_news-2006-08-28.shtml ==================================================== 3. PROJETO GAIA - POSIÇÃO DE ENGENHEIRO DE SOFTWARE (comunicado por Alberto G. O. Krone Martins) Posição de Engenheiro de Software para o projeto Gaia na Universitat de Barcelona - Espanha The position offered is mainly aimed to cover the software development needs of a new component of the simulator named GOG (Gaia Object Generator), that will provide simulated data for many of the intermediate modules of the Gaia data processing. O contrato é de três anos com possibilidade de continuidade. Interessados devem visitar a página http://www.am.ub.es/~xluri/Contract-GOG.txt ====================================================== 4. PROJETO GAIA - PÓS-DOC EM CALIBRAÇÃO FOTOMÉTRICA E ESPECTROSCÓPICA (comunicado por Alberto G. O. Krone Martins) Posição Pós-Doutoral em calibração fotométrica e espectroscópica para o projeto Gaia na Universitat de Barcelona - Espanha The UB team has been involved in the design of the photometric instrument since 1998 (http://gaia.am.ub.es/PWG/) and, now, in the framework of the DPAC (Data Processing and Analysis Consortium), it is committed to develop the internal calibration of the instrument (as a function of wavelength, across the focal plane and the five years of mission) in terms of flux and wavelength scale. The task is in collaboration with other teams mainly in Cambridge, Leiden and Bologna. O contrato é de três anos com possibilidade de continuidade. Interessados devem visitar a página http://www.am.ub.es/~carme/Contract-phot.txt =========================================================== 5. PROJETO GAIA - PÓS-DOC EM SOLUÇÕES DE SISTEMAS BINÁRIOS ESPECTROSCÓPICOS (comunicado por Alberto G. O. Krone Martins) Posição Pós-Doutoral em soluções de sistemas binários espectroscópicos para o projeto Gaia na Université de Liège - Bélgica The High-Energy Astrophysics Group of the University of Liège (Belgium) is offering a postdoctoral position to participate in the development of algorithms and software for Gaia data processing. The successful applicant will be expected to take responsibilities in the development of algorithms and of the related software dealing with the orbital solutions for spectroscopic binary systems, with the measurements of radial velocities on the basis of Gaia spectra, as well as with investigations on the possibility of performing radial velocity measurements from multiple spectra by cross-correlation with templates. O contrato é de um ano com uma possível extensão por mais um segundo ano.
