POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS AND PhD POSITIONS - DARK COSMOLOGY CENTRE **************************************************************************** 1. POSTDOC AND PhD STUDENT IN EXOPLANETARY SYSTEMS RESEARCH (comunicado por Gerardo Juan Manuel Luna) Department of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Science The new Faculty of Science consists of six departments: Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Information and Computing Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Mathematics. The Faculty is home to 3500 students and nearly 2000 staff and is internationally renowned for the quality of its research. The Faculty's academic programmes reflect developments in today's society. The Astronomical Institute of Utrecht University is looking for 1 Postdoc and 1 PhD student in Exoplanetary Systems Research Job description The Experimental Astrophysics group of the Astronomical Institute has received a 5-year grant to build a high-precision imaging polarimeter. This new instrument for the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope will be used to study planetary systems around other stars by detecting the polarization of starlight scattered by circumstellar material. The group is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with experience in optical observations. Experience in the areas of polarimetry and/or the modeling of circumstellar disks are an asset. The PhD student will focus on the design, construction, and calibration of the instrument. Research at our Institute presently covers a range of subjects: solar and stellar physics, compact objects, supernovae, star clusters, high energy processes and cosmic ray physics as well as the development of astronomical instruments. The Institute is part of the largest Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Netherlands with about 15 to 20 astronomy students per year, many of excellent quality. The faculty operates a 64-processor Linux cluster, and applicants will be able to apply for time at the Dutch supercomputer center SARA. The Institute has close ties with the adjacent SRON Laboratory for Space Research and has access to the telescopes at ESO, La Palma, JCMT,and the Westerbork radiotelescopes. The Astronomical Institute is part of the Dutch Research School for Astronomy (NOVA). Terms of employment The positions are available after June 1, 2006. Another PhD position in the area of data reduction, interpretation, and modeling will be available in mid- 2007. We offer a fulltime temporary appointment for four years for the PhD position. Gross salary starts with € 1.933,- per month in the first year and increases to € 2.472,- in the fourth year of employment. A postdoc researcher is offered a temporary appointment for 2 years with the possibility to extend up to 5 years. Gross salary will range between € 2.708,- and € 4140,- per month, depending on qualifications and experiences, (salary scale 10 or 11) according to the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 3%per year. In addition we offer: a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, facilities for child care, flexible employment conditions in which you may trade salary for vacation days or vice versa. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. Further details Information about these positions can be obtained from Prof.dr. Christoph Keller, email C.U.Keller@astro.uu.nl. More information about the department of Physics and Astronomy can be found at http://www.phys.uu.nl. How to apply Applications, including a research statement, a current CV, a list of publications, and three reference letters should be sent to the Personnel Office, Department of Physics and Astronomy, P.O. Box 80000, 3508 TA Utrecht, the Netherlands or submit by e-mail to: p&o@phys.uu.nl. Please mention vacancy number 63607 for the postdoc position, vacancy number 63608 for the PhD position. Applications and letters of reference are due by May 15, 2006. ========================================================================= 2. POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS AND PhD POSITIONS (comunicado por Raimundo Lopes de Oliveira Filho) The Dark Cosmology Centre (DARK, http://www.dark-cosmology.dk) at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, is currently seeking three highly motivated postdoctoral research associates to strengthen its research programme. These will be focussed on the areas of star formation at high redshift and gamma-ray bursts, astrophysics of cosmic dust, and dark matter. Applications are accepted from April 15 2006 and will remain open until 2 June 2006. DARK is also currently seeking applications from capable, energetic and motivated students to pursue a PhD in astrophysics. Applications for these positions are accepted from 15 April 2006 and will remain open only until filled by suitable candidates.
