ESAC SCIENCE WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT (comunicado por Raimundo Lopes de Oliveira Filho) The XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre is organising a workshop in the summer of this year, with the following subject, dates and venue: Variable and Broad Iron Lines around Black Holes Monday the 26th to Wednesday the 28th of June 2006 XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre at ESA's European Space Astronomy Centre, Madrid, Spain The meeting will focus on the iron line emitted around accreting black holes and will concentrate on results and discoveries from XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku, as well as other current missions, and on theoretical progress. Broad iron lines have been observed in the X-ray spectra of some Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and accreting Galactic Black Holes (GBH). The widths of the lines indicate that the emission originates close to the black hole where strong gravity effects dominate. Variable lines, often with red or blueshifts are also seen, which also come from the inner regions. The broad and variable lines are believed to be due to X-ray reflection from the accretion flow, and to reveal its geometry and dynamics. Alternative interpretations involving complex absorption introduce some ambiguity which is now being reduced with new data showing evidence for further reflection features such as the soft excess and Compton hump. We plan an in-depth review of the data and interpretation, and discussion of future challenges. Further information is available at http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/workshops/2006_science/ =================================================================== 2. 6th ESAC SAS WORKSHOP (comunicado por Raimundo Lopes de Oliveira Filho) The SOC announces the 6th Science Analysis System (SAS) Workshop, which will be held at ESAC from Tuesday the 30th of May to Friday the 2nd of June 2006. SAS Workshops aim at providing astronomers, having little or no experience of XMM-Newton data analysis, with an introduction to the procedures and techniques to successfully reduce and analyze XMM-Newton data. About one-third of the Workshop time is devoted to presentations, and the remaining two-thirds to practical training (hands-on) sessions. During the latter, one workstation will be available for every two participants. The lecture program covers topics such as: instrument calibration status, SAS installation and set-up, spectral analysis of point-like sources with EPIC and RGS, EPIC source detection and timing analysis, analysis of extended sources with EPIC, OM data reduction and analysis, the XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue, and the science archive (XSA). Interested persons are invited to fill in the registration form, available at: http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/workshops/sas6/ Attendance is strictly limited to 20 persons to ensure proper support during the training sessions. CHAMADA E NORMAS PARA INSCRIÇÃO DE CHAPAS PARA A ELEIÇÃO DA PRÓXIMA DIRETORIA DA SAB PERÍODO NOVEMBRO/2006 A OUTUBRO/2008 (comunicado pela Comissão Eleitoral da SAB) Lembramos a todos os associados a data limite para a submissão de chapas para a próxima eleição de diretoria da SAB - 30 de maio de 2006, assim como as normas para inscrição de chapas. Reproduzimos abaixo as normas de submissão: 1 - A Comissão Eleitoral da SAB, composta pelos associados: Vera Ap. F. Martin (presidente), Alberto Rodríguez Ardila e Alan Alves Brito, estará recebendo inscrições de chapas completas, para compor a nova Diretoria, até 30 de maio de 2006, impreterivelmente. Enviar as chapas para o endereço eletrônico da secretária da SAB (vmartin1963@hotmail.com); 2 - Cada chapa inscrita deverá ser acompanhada pelo acordo explícito do candidato à Presidente, que terá a responsabilidade de garantir a concordância de todos os membros da chapa. Este acordo poderá ser feito através de correio eletrônico à Secretária da SAB (vmartin1963@hotmail.com); 3 - Cada chapa deverá apresentar curriculum vitae resumido de cada um de seus membros. Recomenda-se que a inscrição de cada chapa seja acompanhada de um programa resumido; 4 - No caso de não haver inscrições de chapas no prazo previsto acima, a Diretoria deverá propor pelo menos uma chapa até 1 (um) mês antes da Assembléia Geral. Para cada chapa proposta pela Diretoria, deverá haver o acordo explícito de cada um dos componentes; 5 - A votação será feita de acordo com as seguintes regras: - Os votos se farão por chapa; - As cédulas eleitorais listarão as diversas chapas inscritas indicando para cada nome o respectivo cargo em disputa; - Um mesmo candidato pode aparecer em mais de um chapa, com o seu acordo explicito; - A votação será feita de forma eletrônica e secreta. O sócio que desejar fazer a votação por intermédio de correspondência (correio) deverá comunicar à Secretária da SAB com certa antecedência (início de junho) para que o envelope com a cédula seja enviado em tempo hábil para votação. Solicitamos que a preferência seja dada para a forma eletrônica. Na reunião anual, serão recebidos apenas os votos por procuração, mediante documentação adequada, até o início da Assembléia Geral, quando se encerrará o processo de votação. ***************************************************************************
