Com o intuito de manter toda a comunidade astronômica
brasileira informada sobre recentes desenvolvimentos
no Observatório Gemini e no Telescópio SOAR, o LNA
disponibilizou na sua página da internet as apresentações

instrumentação do Gemini e Kepler de Oliveira sobre
o programa de "Early Science" do SOAR.

2. LATIN AMERICAN ASTRONOMY SUMMER SCHOOL

Santiago, Chile, 8-10 December 2005
______________________________________________

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Sociedad Chilena de
Astronomia  (SOCHIAS) are organizing a LATIN AMERICAN ASTRONOMY SUMMER
SCHOOL. It will take place from 8-10 December 2005, the week before the
Regional Meeting of the International Astronomical Union to be held on 12-
16 December 2005 in Pucon, Chile (~800 km South of Santiago).

The aim of this Multi-thematic Latin American School, is to provide
students and young researchers exposure to different front-line areas of  
research presented by major players in promoting and/or executing those
areas. The lectures will have a pedagogical profile.

The main lecturers are:

Malcolm Longair (Cambridge University, UK)
Bob Williams (STScI, USA)
Gloria Dubner (IAFE/CONICET, Argentina)
Pat Osmer (Ohio State University, USA)
Luis Felipe Rodriguez (UNAM, Mexico)
Dante Minniti (P.Universidad Catolica, Chile)
Felix Mirabel (ESO, Chile)

The lectures will cover the following themes:

- Extrasolar planets
- Star Formation and the Interstellar Medium
- Supernovae
- Black holes
- Evolution of Galaxies.
- Distant Quasars
- The Deep Universe

Furthermore, Riccardo Giacconi (Nobel Prize in Physics 2002) may deliver
a lecture to the General Public (TBC), and Monica Rubio (Universidad de
Chile) will give a lecture on Astronomy in Chile and Latinamerica.
