RESEARCH FELLOW IN X-RAY BINARY RESEARCH (comunicado por Raimundo Lopes de Oliveira Filho ) University of Southampton School of Physics and Astronomy Research Fellow in X-ray binary research Ref: (04F0847) A postdoctoral fellowship is available to work with Dr Malcolm Coe in the Astronomy Group at the University of Southampton, UK. The position will focus on studies of the population of X-ray binaries in the Magellanic Clouds and their comparison with the Milky Way population. The project will make use of an approved extensive Chandra survey of the SMC together with ground-based optical data from the SALT telescope. The successful applicant will be encouraged to conduct research in any related areas in support of the general programme of XRB populations in external galaxies. Applicants with both observational and interpretative backgrounds are encouraged to apply. A few years postdoctoral experience would be valuable. The Astronomy Group at Southampton University is a leading institute in high-energy astrophysics, with active research, both observational and theoretical, into accretion and related processes on all scales. Furthermore, it is the UK centre for INTEGRAL, is a partner in SALT. The group is itself part of the School of Physics & Astronomy, which achieved a 5* rating in the last UK Research Assessment Exercise, making it one of the top five Physics schools in the country for research.
