CHAMADA PARA TELESCÓPIO SOAR - 2005B (comunicado por Alberto Rodríguez Ardila) À Comunidade Astronômica Brasileira. A Comissão de Programas do SOAR informa que está aberta a chamada para o envio de propostas para observações a serem realizadas com o Telescópio SOAR durante o semestre 2005B. A chamada visa selecionar propostas que possam testar as diferentes possibilidades de se fazer ciência com os instrumentos atualmente disponíveis no telescópio. O início da operação plena do SOAR está previsto para 2006. Entretanto, no semestre 2005B o telescópio continuará sendo oferecido à comunidade no programa de "ciência inicial". Espera-se que aproximadamente 25% do tempo disponível seja dedicado a esse programa, o que equivale a cerca de 15 noites para o Brasil. Todo o tempo concedido será no modo de "risco compartilhado" e não será transferido a um semestre posterior caso o projeto não possa ser executado, qualquer que seja o motivo. Durante 2005B, duas grandes tarefas de engenharia estão sendo contempladas: a substituição dos links laterais do espelho primário e a substituição dos trilhos da trapeira. É bem provável que essas atividades ocupem uma fração importante do tempo na segunda metade do período 2005B. Portanto, a ciência inicial terá mais tempo disponível durante a primeira metade desse semestre. Três instrumentos estarão disponíveis durante o programa de ciência inicial: o Imageador Óptico do SOAR (SOI); o espectrógrafo e imageador infravermelho OSIRIS, e o espectrógrafo óptico Goodman. Alertamos, no entanto, que no momento só os dois primeiros instrumentos estão em capacidade de realizar observações de ciência. Informações mais detalhadas sobre esses instrumentos e que são necessárias para a elaboração das propostas podem ser obtidas diretamente na página do SOAR no endereço: http://www.soartelescope.org/release/06observing/eng_observing/instruments/main_instruments.html Devido ao calendário de engenharia, todas as observações serão realizadas no modo de serviço. Portanto, a descrição e a justificativa da configuração dos instrumentos em cada proposta submetida deve estar bem especificada. Além disso, os alvos de ciência devem ter uma janela de observação de pelo menos dois meses durante o período de 2005B (08/2005-01/2006). Nesta fase de Ciência Inicial, o programa não pode ter como requisito para sua execução a alta qualidade de imagem que o telescópio poderá oferecer (ou seja, assuma um seeing de 0.7-1.1 arcsec em lugar de 0.3-0.7 arcsec). O sistema de tip-tilt também não estará ainda em funcionamento. A equipe do SOAR fará um grande esforço para agendar os programas de ciência durante o período de lua nova. Recomenda-se que sejam especificadas as condições de tempo mínimas (cobertura de nuvens, qualidade de imagem, lua) necessárias para realizar as observações e ainda obter dados que permitam realizar a ciência proposta. A equipe do SOAR fará um grande esforço para agendar os programas de ciência durante o período de lua nova. Embora não seja um requisito a ser exigido pelo TAC, será de extrema utilidade para a equipe de comissionamento do SOAR que os proponentes se comprometam a reduzir rapidamente as observações e enviar os resultados, já reduzidos e avaliados, à equipe. A data limite para o recebimento dos pedidos de ciência inicial é 6 de maio de 2005, às 24:00 h (horário de Brasília). Pede-se que as inscrições sejam feitas até a data limite de 20 de Maio de 2005. Obtive informacoes adicionais, extra oficiais, que talvez seja do interesse de alguns colegas. A vaga para o CEFET Química de NILOPOLIS/RJ, é para a unidade Nilópolis e não para a unidade Maracanã. O selecionado deverá lecionar física no ensino técnico.Também lecionará atronomia e física nos cursos de licenciatura em física e química. O salario para alguem com doutorado e dedicacao exclusiva, mais gratificacoes e' em torno de 4.300 reais. A vaga esta' aberta para todos que tenham graduacao em fisica ou em astronomia mas que tenham pos graduacao em astronomia. Note que pos graduacao em astronomia pode contemplar pos graduacoes que oficialmente podem estar em outras areas, mas cujo tema da tese (ou dissertacao) tenha sido sobre astronomia. Claro que situacoes como estas nao estao explicitas no edital e podem cair no item do edital chamado "casos omissos" ou algo assim. PLEASE CHECK THE LIST in the IAUS229-ACM2005 homepage at http://www.on.br/acm2005 Citizens from these countries do not need a visa to enter and stay in Brazil up to 90 days. Citizens from all other countries do need a tourist visa to enter in Brazil. Among these we can mention: USA, China, Japan, Russia, Slovak Rep., Czech Rep., Hungaria and many other. The tourist visa provides coverage for attending scientific conferences, seminars, or meetings. Note that tourist visa holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil, but they can get per-diem allowances. AMERICAN CITIZENS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT IT MIGHT TAKE MORE THAN ONE MONTH TO GET THE VISA IN THEIR CASE. For other citizens, it should usually take a couple of weeks or less. Please check this with the nearest Consulate as soon as possible. The LOC will not be responsible for any problems concerning delay of the visa expedition. SCIENCE OPERATIONS AT GEMINI SOUTH (comunicado por Max Faundez-Abans) Science Group Head of Science Operations at Gemini South - La Serena, Chile The Gemini Observatory has available a position to lead and manage day-to-day science operations of the Gemini South telescope. The Head of Science Operations will lead and manage the team of about 25 astronomers, System Support Associates and Data Analysts in the preparation and execution of queue and classical science programs at the telescope, the multi-instrument queue observing process and the data quality control and handling system. The Gemini South Head of Science Operations will work in close collaboration with their direct counterpart at Gemini North and with the Associate Director for Science Operations to maintain an effective, streamlined and standardized observing process at both Gemini Telescopes. The Heads of Science Operations at the two Gemini sites will work to maintain a vibrant scientific life at the Observatory and are expected to conduct a vigorous research program. Active astronomers and scientists with experience in science management and/or willing to take a new challenge are invited to apply. Candidates should have a Ph. D. in astronomy or in a relevant field of the physical sciences. Candidates with a strong background in astronomical research are preferred. The Head of Science Operations at Gemini South will be based in La Serena, Chile. The desired starting date for the position is in late 2005.
