INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION SYMPOSIUM 229 (comunicado por Daniela Lazzaro) INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION SYMPOSIUM 229 ASTEROIDS, COMETS, METEORS 2005 IAUS229-ACM2005 August 7-12, 2005 Buzios, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil FIRST CIRCULAR Rationale: The IAU Symposium 229: Asteroids, Comets, Meteors (IAUS229-ACM2005) will focus on all aspects of studies on asteroids, comets, and meteors, including observations, theories of origin and evolution, discoveries, astrometry, dynamics, internal structure, mineralogical composition, space missions, laboratory studies, classifications, and databases. Presentation and discussion of results from space missions are expected too. IAUS229-ACM2005 will be the ninth of the international series of ACM conferences, first held at Uppsala (Sweden) in 1983. The spirit of ACM conferences is to welcome researchers from all nations interested on asteroids, comets and meteors studies to a gathering where ideas can be openly shared and discussed. The hallmark of these meetings is a wide international participation that is representative of the broad international character of the field. Main Topics: The list of topics to be covered by the IAUS229-ACM2005 meeting intends to provide a stimulating reference frame for research and discussion. It has been designed to enhance the interdisciplinary nature of the Symposium in the quest for a unified understanding of the origin and evolution of small Solar System bodies as a whole, call them asteroids, comets, trans-Neptunian objects or meteors. The main topics of the meeting will be: Space missions: results from "Deep Impact" and other recent missions; future prospects. Internal structure of asteroids and comets: binaries and satellites, gravitational aggregates, cometary nuclei structure. Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs): physical properties, structure of the Kuiper belt. Connections between asteroids, cometary nuclei and trans-Neptunian objects: differences and similarities. Connections between asteroids and meteorites: mineralogical characterization. Connections between comets, meteor showers and interplanetary dust. Minor bodies dynamics: origin of comets, transitions between populations, non-gravitational forces, asteroid families. Collisions and impacts: cratering, breakup, collisional evolution, hazards, bolides and super bolides, evolution of life. Near-Earth Objects (NEOs): searching, statistics, origin, physical characterization. Origin and evolution of our Solar System and extra-solar planetary systems: implications from minor bodies studies. Next generation surveys of the Solar System: science with the next generation surveys Although avoiding including in the main list the categories solely devoted to specific populations of minor bodies, communications covering any topic about asteroids, comets, trans-Neptunian objects, meteors, meteorites and interplanetary material are welcome. Meeting Schedule and Format: Scientific sessions will take place from Monday, August 8th, through Friday. The format of the conference will be organized on the basis of 3-4 plenary oral sessions per day. Only plenary sessions will be programmed, since parallel sessions would be incompatible with the interdisciplinary spirit of the meeting. Poster presentations will be exposed during the whole meeting. Dedicated sessions for posters will be scheduled on two days afer the afternoon plenary session. Proceedings: Proceedings volume of the IAUS229-ACM2005 will be published by Cambridge University Press within six months after the meeting. The cost of the volume is included in the registration fee. More information will soon be available in the web page of the meeting. Financial Support: A limited number of grants from IAU and from other sources will be available for individual participants. These grants can be used primarily for room, board, and/or registration fee of candidates unable to provide these by themselves. Applications must be sent using the IAU Grant Application Form that can be downloaded from http://www.iau.org/IAU/Activities/meetings/travappl.html. Please print the form, fill in all the fields in capital letters and send it by fax or regular airmail to: IAU Symposium No. 229 Asteroids, Comets, Meteors 2005 Financial Support Application Observatorio Nacional Rua Gal. Venue: The IAUS229-ACM2005 will take place at the Conference Center of the tlantico Buzios Hotel, at Buzios (RJ) Brazil. This is a small town located at a two hours ride from the city of Rio de Janeiro. Once a small fisherman's village, nowaday it is a famous turistic attraction for its beautiful beaches and friendly people. Transportation from and to the Rio de Janeiro International Airport will be provided by the organization. Detailed information will be posted on the symposium web site shortly. NOAO SURVEY PROGRAM LETTERS OF INTENT DUE DATE EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 15, 2005 (comunicado por Alan Alves Brito) Following a review by the AURA Observatories Council, the NOAO Survey Program will be accepting proposals for new surveys to start in the 2005B and 2006A semesters. This program supports large observational projects that allow the identification of complete, well-defined samples that can yield both conclusions based on statistical analysis of the survey data itself and also provide important subsets for more detailed observations with larger telescopes. In the four years (1999-2002) in which surveys were solicited, fifteen were accepted. All but four of these will have been completed by the start of semester 2005B. Investigators must submit letters of intent to propose for the NOAO Survey Program to surveys@noao.edu by February 15, 2005 to be eligible to propose for an NOAO Survey Program commencing in the 2005B semester. Letters should include the broad scientific goals of the program, the membership of the survey team, the telescope(s) and instrument(s) to be requested, the approximate amount of telescope time to be requested, and the duration of the proposed survey. Proposals are due March 15, 2005. Changes or clarifications to the guidelines for the Survey Program include the following: - All telescopes on which NOAO allocates time are available for surveys except for the Gemini, Keck, and Magellan telescopes. - The nominal cap for the survey program is 20% of the telescope time. Large (>4.2m), medium (3.5m-4.2m), and small (<3.5m) telescopes are considered separately. Survey allocations may exceed the cap for small telescopes if the overall oversubscription rate is low. - The maximum period over which survey observations are carried out is 3 years (formerly 5). An exception may be made for time-domain surveys that require longer time coverage. - The deadline for survey proposals is March 15, 2005. The proposal form is longer and somewhat different than the regular proposal form, and it includes questions about management plan and data distribution. The current version of the form will be available at the NOAO web site on February 15, 2005. - Proposals will be reviewed by a separate Survey Panel, prior to being considered by the merging TAC for inclusion into the ranked lists for the available telescopes. They will be evaluated on scientific merit, broader impact to society, credibility of management plan, data distribution plan, and the value of proposed deliverables to community. Separate grades in each of these areas will be combined to determine a final ranking. - Note that broader impact, the NSFs second criterion can be effectively addressed by the inclusion of co-investigators from non-PhD-granting institutions. - Note that for most surveys, reduced, calibrated images are a desirable deliverable, as opposed to catalogs of objects. Following recommendation for support by the NOAO TAC, NOAO may negotiate an agreement on the deliverables, the manner in which they will be distributed to the community, and the schedule for delivery with successful proposers. - It is imperative that proposers carefully and explicitly justify the number of nights requested, including allowance for integration time on program objects and calibration exposures, as well as the appropriate overheads. No increase for the expected weather statistics should be included. We intend to grant time that includes an increase based on statistical weather information that should allow most surveys to complete their observations. Surveys will be given one chance in their penultimate year to justify an additional supplemental allocation if they have suffered from technical problems at the telescope or weather significantly worse than average.
