TWO TENURE-TRACK POSITIONS - UNIVERSIDAD DE VALPARAISO (comunicado pelo socio Marcio Catelan) Two Tenure-Track Positions UNIVERSIDAD DE VALPARAISO Departmento de Fisica y Meteorologia Facultad de Ciencias Casilla 5030, Valparaiso Chile Tel: 56-32-508012 FAX: 56-32-508089 URL: http://www.fismet.uv.cl Email Submission Address: sylvia.diez@uv.cl Email Inquiries: sylvia.diez@uv.cl Attention: Sylvia Diez, Academic Secretary We are offering two faculty positions in astronomy at all levels (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) at the Universidad de Valparaiso, Chile. One appointment is expected to start in November of 2004 and the other in March, 2005. The position will be initially for a period of 2 years, with the possibility to be extended to a permanent position afterwards. The successful candidates should have a strong commitment to scientific research. They will also be involved in developing an Astronomy Group in our Department. Teaching duties concern physics and astronomy courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. Fluency in Spanish will be an advantage and will be expected after an initial period of about one year. The successful candidates will have access to the 10 percent of Chilean observing time at all telescopes operating in Chile, including the VLT, Gemini South, SOAR, Magellan telescopes on Las Campanas and ALMA. We encourage applications from all areas of astronomy, including theory. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a discussion of relevant experience and research interests, publication list and the names of two referees who are familiar with the applicant's work. Requests for additional information and applications must be directed to sylvia.diez@uv.cl. Complete applications should be received by 15 September, 2004. ============================================================================= 2. 28th INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL FOR YOUNG ASTRONOMERS (comunicado pelo socio Laerte Sodre) 28th International School for Young Astronomers Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica (INAOE) Tonantzintla, Puebla, Mexico. 25th July to 12th August, 2005 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rationale The International School for Young Astronomers (ISYA) is an initiative of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to reinforce and promote the development of professional astronomy in communities around the world. The ISYA places a special emphasis on students located in areas that do not have the benefit of a local research institute that teaches most of the sub-disciplines of Astronomy. The IAU Executive Committee has selected the Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica (INAOE) in Tonantzintla, Puebla, Mexico, to host its 28th ISYA school between the 25th of July and the 12th of August 2005. In addition to the IAU and INAOE, the 28th ISYA school is also supported by the Instituto de Astronomia de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). We expect to receive applications to attend this school from graduate and final-year undergraduate students in the Americas, and especially from Latin American and the Caribbean countries. The school will cover a wide range of topics in theoretical and observational Astronomy, from Planetology to Cosmology (see a detailed list below). The students will have the opportunity to attend lecture courses, practical laboratories on observational techniques and data mining, and conduct observations with our on-campus optical facilities. There will also be a visit to the Large Millimetre Telescope Observatory, which is operated by INAOE and the University of Massachussets in Amherst (USA). All these activities will be led and supervised by our international team of professors. Although the ISYA is not a research conference, poster panels will be available for the students to present a summary of their research projects. Apart from the academic school activities, the participants will also have the opportunity to experience the archeological, artistic and scientific environment of the central valleys of Mexico through a series of cultural visits and events. The official language of the school will be English. Applications are received through our website: http://www.inaoep.mx/~isya28 The accepted ISYA students, around 30 young astronomers, will be granted scholarships to cover their travel and subsistance expenses for the duration of the school. We are looking forward to seeing you in Tonantzintla in 2005.
