ESCOLA DE VERAO EM DINAMICA ORBITAL E PLANETOLOGIA ================================================================================ 1. THE GEMINI OBSERVATORY IS RECRUITING FOR A SCIENCE FELLOW IN ADAPTIVE OPTICS TO WORK IN HAWAII. - comunicacao do socio Marcos Diaz The Gemini Observatory operates two 8-meter telescopes, one located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii and the other on Cerro Pachon in Chile. The observatory is an international collaboration between the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Both telescopes are now ramping up science operations. The scientific team is based in Hilo, Hawaii, and in La Serena, Chile. The Gemini Science Fellows are members of the science team and they participate actively in the main activities of the Observatory: direct support executing scientific observations at the Gemini telescopes; scientific support of the commissioning of the telescope and its sub-systems, facility and instrumentation; and active participation in the scientific life of the observatory through a strong personal research program and collaborative initiatives with the other members of the science staff. Gemini is committed to the scientific productivity of its research staff. Forty percent of a Gemini Science Fellow's time will be available for astronomical research. The research should focus on areas in which Gemini will make a major impact. Requires Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or a related discipline. Substantial experience with optical/infrared observations, data analysis and/or instrumentation is desirable. We preferentially seek astronomers with experience or knowledge of adaptive optics and high spatial resolution imaging and spectroscopy. The duration of the position will be for three years, with possible extension for two more years. Fellows will be based in Hilo, Hawaii, for the length of the project. For further information contact Jean-Rene Roy (Gemini North Associate Director), e-mail: jrroy@gemini.edu; or Phil Puxley (Gemini South Associate Director), e-mail: ppuxley@gemini.edu. Send a resume, a statement of research and development activity interest, and the names of three professional references by January 3, 2003 to: Gemini Observatory, HR Department/GSF-AO, 670 N. A'ohoku Place, Hilo, HI 96720; fax: (808) 935-9802; e-mail: gemini-jobs@gemini.edu. For more information, visit our Web site: http://www.gemini.edu.
