___________________________________________________________________ O PRAZO PARA SUBMETER PROPOSTAS E' EXTREMAMENTE CURTO: AS PROPOSTAS DEVEM SER ENVIADAS DIRETAMENTE PARA O CIENTISTA DO INSTRUMENTO, Bryan Miller (bmiller@gemini.edu), ATE' O DIA 01 DE NOVEMBRO DE 2002. SEGUE COMUNICADO DE Bryan Miller COM MAIORES INFORMACOES _____________________________________________________________________ Dear Colleagues, With the arrival of GMOS South to Cerro Pachon fast approaching it is time to think about system verification (SV) projects for the final stages of commissioning. The GMOS-S SV program will be completely separate from the GMOS-N program, so I'm asking you to either resubmit your program tailored to the southern hemisphere or submit new projects. I especially encourage new members of the Gemini staff, the GMOS instrument team, and national office staff who support GMOS and who did not participate in the GMOS-N SV to put in ideas. Collaboration is highly encouraged since we cannot do a large number of projects and the proprietary period is only two months. System verification is designed to test the full Gemini observing system for a given instrument and all the modes of the instrument. Therefore, we need a wide variety of projects for the full range of GMOS-S modes and Cerro Pachon weather conditions. While the summer weather in Chile is generally good, we do need some projects that do not require 50%-tile image quality and photometric skies. Programs for worse than average conditions will be greatly appreciated and are more likely to be executed. In addition, targets south of -30 degrees declination are easier to observe because they are out of the prevailing northwest wind. There will be a total of 12 nights available for GMOS-S SV. The following modes will be available for testing. Imaging (2 nights, including MOS pre-imaging) ------- Filters: u, g, r, i, z -Extended sources -Point sources -Non-sidereal objects Standard Spectroscopy (4 nights) --------------------- Gratings: B1200, R831, B600, R600, R400, R150 Order sorting filters: GG455, OG515, RG615, Ca triplet -Longslit spectroscopy -MOS spectroscopy including one, two, and three banks of slitlets -Parallactic angle tracking -ADC - fixed and follow modes, the ADC may not be available early in the commissioning -Non-sidereal objects Nod & Shuffle (2 nights) ------------- -can be used with longslit, MOS, and IFU -may be commissioned separate from the basic instrument Polarimetry (1 night) ----------- -Available only when GMOS is on the bottom ISS port. Not available initially. IFU (3 nights) ------------------------- -Not available initially, probably commissioned in the last half of 2003. Projects are welcome. Here are the likely dates when SV programs for different modes will be done. MOS and longslit modes include nod&shuffle. Imaging/longslit/MOS pre-imaging - February MOS - May/June IFU - third quarter 2003 ADC - tbd, maybe 3rd or 4th quarter 2003 More information on the modes and instrument specifications can be found at http://www.gemini.edu/sciops/instruments/gmos/gmosIndex.html As most of you know, the early commissioning will be done with a CCD array that includes one bad CCD. This does not significantly affect the imaging field-of-view, but it will impact spectroscopy, especially MOS. It is Gemini's desire not to release SV data without a complete focal plane, so the majority of the SV will be done after the bad detector is replaced around April or May. Target visibility for imaging and longslit/MOS spectroscopy should take this into consideration. IFU targets should be visible around the end of the year. The exact timing of the commissioning and SV will also depend on the T-ReCS commissioning schedule. The SV process will be similar to a normal proposal round. Please send a summary of your program, including brief scientific and technical justifications, observing constraints, target lists, and instrument configurations using the 2003A Phase I Tool, see http://www.gemini.edu/sciops/P1help/p1Index.html Use the resources available for GMOS North. Scientific justifications should be brief (maximum 500 words) but clearly state which modes are being tested. Technical justifications should be complete enough that feasibility can be assessed easily. There is now a development version GMOS-S ITC to assist you with the final Phase I preparations. It can be found at the following URL: http://devitc.gemini.edu:8080/itc/itc/servlets/ITCgmosSouth-v3-0-1.html The deadline for emailing me the SV Phase I XML files is Friday, November 1, 2002. Early submissions will be appreciated. The Phase I XML files will be used as skeletons for detailed Phase II preparations using the latest Observing Tool, see http://www.gemini.edu/sciops/OThelp/otIndex.html I will inform PIs when the Phase II files are needed. It will probably be in early December 2002 to avoid the holidays, 2003A queue preparations, and final preparation for GMOS-S commissioning. Submitting a SV program or even having a SV program selected as high priority does not guarantee that data will be taken. Selection for SV will also be based on the abilities of the proposers to reduce the data and return feedback within a reasonable time. The proprietary period for SV data is two months. PIs and their collaborators will need to provide reduced data for public release.
