GALEX, planned for launch in July 2002, is a NASA mission with a French contribution funded by CNES. Appointment is contingent on completion of Ph.D. Appointment is for one year, renewable twice (starting between April 1st and October 1st 2002). The GALEX instrument is a 50-cm telescope operating in the far and near-ultraviolet (135-300 nm) with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. The main scientific goal of GALEX is to map the history and probe the causes of star formation out to redshift z=2, when most stars, elements, and galaxy disks were formed. Applicants should propose research programs based on GALEX data. They will be expected to work in collaboration with the GALEX group at LAM and in the US. Interests of the LAM group include star formation, UV extinction, galaxy evolution, environmental effects and large scale structure, as well as evolved populations and the IGM. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the analysis of the GALEX data and to the development of science analysis tools. Opportunities for additional observations are available through CFHT and ESO's astronomical facilities including the VLT. Applications including a brief statement of research interests, relevant work experience, curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference should reach LAM before 1 March 2002. ***********************************************************************
